These just-unveiled glow-under-UV angelfish could go on sale in 2012. They were created at the Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology in Taipei, Taiwan, along with similarly modified convict cichlids.

The first genetically modified pet to go on sale was a fluorescent medaka, or rice fish, which was launched in Taiwan in 2003. It was soon followed by the "GloFish", a fluorescent zebrafish sold in many countries, including the US. Both were spin-offs from basic research, rather than being created specifically for the pet trade.

wicked looking!

Saw this on another site and personally it makes me sick. I love angels and the many different variants out there - I hope these don't catch on and they stop genetically altering an already beautiful creature.

:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

I find it disgusting and cruel! With so many man made colors, I don't see the need to produce these fish. I understand and to a degree agree with the initial intensions of the "glo" gene but why does it have to spread into the hobby?

I don't understand how that can be cruel, it doesn't harm the fish in any way. If you think that that is cruel then you can't buy any kind of mixed dog, as they altered genetics the same way they did to create different types of dogs. However, they used more complicated genetic modifications for the fish.

Zebra danios cost a buck, and glo fish cost 6 times that, which is 6 dollars. So angel fish and convicts will be jacked waaaay up I bet.

Eh it doesn't hurt the fish in anyway. Seems like a good thing for a kid's tank. I just don't see the harm. I think the new cichlids are kind of neat. Especially if you set up a cool theme around them. Some sort of radioactive theme? I always end up feeling bad for liking them :o

:iagree:Completely agree with you guys. Just because it isn't found in the wild, doesn't mean its wrong. It's like saying marble, koi and blusher angels are cruel too. i mean, glowing is a little more extreme, but it doesnt hurt the fish, so I do not see any harm. It is just in there genes, they can't help it and they dont know the difference so that's that. And also, thats only my opinion, so w/e.

:topic: Is it true that if you breed a Glo-Fish Danio with another Glo-Fish Danio, they will make Glo-Fish Danio babies? Since it is genetic, at least some must glow, right?

And, I'm proud that i figured out how to multi-quote :) :) :)

When they can make me glow, I'll be impressed... and in line. Wish they'd leave the poor fishies alone though.
