Angelfish, Convicts Next to Get Glo Genes

I don't understand how that can be cruel, it doesn't harm the fish in any way. If you think that that is cruel then you can't buy any kind of mixed dog, as they altered genetics the same way they did to create different types of dogs. However, they used more complicated genetic modifications for the fish.

Zebra danios cost a buck, and glo fish cost 6 times that, which is 6 dollars. So angel fish and convicts will be jacked waaaay up I bet.

Not really. With dogs they bred them for specific characteristics like long legs or short hair, same with other colors of angels and cons. With these fish they injected a new gene into the eggs to make the fish glow. I think that is the part that I have an issue with. If they could just breed glowing fish without having to inject the initial stock I wouldn't have this much of a problem with it, but thats just one mans opinion.

Also, GuppyMan,
Yes the offspring would glow but it is against the law to breed and distriute "GloFish". Also, since I am on the subject if you were to breed different colors of "GloFish" (ie: Green, Red, Yellow) some would be the same as the mother, some the same as the father and some would be a mix of both colors. This is also the same if you were to breed "GloFish" with any of the Zebra Danio varieties.

I get concerned when it appears an animal can't function properly, like the 'celestial eye' goldfish, whose eyes are permanently fixed upward.

Darwin must be rolling over in his grave to see what's going on today. Patented glow-in-the-dark pets? Oh HELL yes, when can I get some?

its not cruel to the fish because they do not suffer because of it. and if they do, its much less then balloon mollies or even angelfish or goldfish with fins that are so long they struggle to swim.

cruel to look at though? maybe. i sure dont like it one bit, thats for sure.

then again, i doubt these will ever catch on because they are likely to be ridiculously expensive. you can get a regular zebra danio for $1, and a glofish goes for $5. so,you can look at it as either adding four dollars to the price of the fish or multiplying the price by five. either way, in my area we are looking at $9 or $25 nickel-sized angelfish, and that will not sell when angelfish that are just as attractive go for $5 or usually less.

I find it disgusting and cruel! With so many man made colors, I don't see the need to produce these fish. I understand and to a degree agree with the initial intensions of the "glo" gene but why does it have to spread into the hobby?

most angelfish have man-made colors...think about it, how many angelfish do you see are the wild type? it took months of searching through huge tanks of nickel-sized angelfish before i found ONE that was wild-type looking. most angelfish that you will find in pet stores today are 100% man-made varieties, because they are simply more colorful and more interesting to the average fish buyer.

Razz, I have heard this as well but details seem strangely lacking. Who exactly passed this law, and when? Who is in charge of enforcing it, and how do they propose to do so? Pass out waterproof anti-sex pamphlets in glo-organism tanks? Itty bitty chastity belts? :)

Point being I assume the fish can be got in both male and female models, and if they are in the same tank they are going to Do It at some point. So I assume the law (?) forbids anyone but the manufacturer, as it were, from selling them for profit.

Assuming again, I suspect that this law will go over about as well as the anti-drug and other such laws have. Glo-model danios have been on the market for some years now...has anyone heard of anybody selling (home-bred) ones? Or being prosecuted for same?

GloFish are patented. Breeding and distributing them without license is patent infringement. You'd have to get pretty big and brazen to attract the attention of the patent holder and incur any consequences. Personally I wouldn't buy a GloFish on a bet, but I sell the heck out of them. There's no cruelty involved and unlike some people I don't feel entitled to dictate to others what their tastes should be.

A glow in the dark labrador would be kinda cool for night frisbee.

As said before, they are patented and cannot be sold for a profit. I heard this when I E-maild the people at GloFish.com quite some time ago.
