I have never had an aquarium before so this is all new to me, but I am a research first kind of guy so I have been learning a lot lately. The kids wanted an aquarium so I found a 33 gallon bow front with cabinet stand on craigslist. Just picked it up last Saturday (August 21st). I have read The Simple Guide To Freshwater Aquariums by David E. Boruchowitz. I just filled the tank last night and am now in the waiting cycling phase.

I have some questions but I will post those in the appropriate forums. For now I just wanted to say "Hi" and show appreciation for all I have already learned here by reading through the forums.

Welcome to AC. We love pics, so post some ASAP -- even if your tank is empty. It's fun to keep a photo diary of your progress.

Welcome home to AC! :)

are you using ammonia to cycle your tank (fishless cycle)?

Welcome home to AC! :)

are you using ammonia to cycle your tank (fishless cycle)?

Based on the book I just read (The simple guide to freshwater aquariums) I was planning to use the suggested method of adding some hardy fish (I was planning on a school of 6 Danios) and monitoring the ammonia levels, changing 30-50% water when ammonia rises above acceptable level, continue to repeat through nitrite phase until ammonia and nitrite drop and remain near zero. I will then begin to slowly stock more fish.

I understand from reading these forums that there is some strong opinions on fishy vs fishless cycling. I'm not looking to choose sides in this debate. I'm just following the advice of a book written by someone who has been doing it for six decades. I won't claim to know any better.

i would highly suggest fishless cycling instead, less stress on the fish, and gives you time to consider what you want to stock the tank with once it is cycled.

It's nice to meet you joe!! Welcome to AC!!
