When can I start losing it? (bicycle relatedand guarantee options)

^^ I know what you mean, and I don't expect an awesome mountain bike for 200$... however, the last bike I purchased was the same type of bike I bought this time, and I absolutely loved the bike. It's a schwinn btw. nothing great but it did the job. very solid, never had problems with gears slipping. I serviced it once in the 2 years I bought it. Left it out in the rain, but it kept going...

That bike was stollen a few weeks ago, which is why I settled for the same bike (slightly different model, as the one I had was discontinued)... And so far, it's nothing like the one I had.. Feels flimsy, too delicate, gears slip, shocks don't feel as good.

No problem, we own a Schwinn as well, it is my wife's bike, kind of a tourer/hybrid bike, but not used so much anymore since we bought her a new MTB. I know Schwinn were sold to Dorel back in 2004, so maybe somewhere along the line the quality dropped.

I would take it back and ask for a new bike at this point, if they continue to be unhelpful get a refund and go somewhere else. Even if it is another store that sells the same bikes.

I think that's what I'll do ... My only concern is whether or not they'll take it back since I did use it those three times..

We'll see what happens, I'm bringing it back tomorrow.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Update:

brought the bike back for the 4th time, this time I wasn't as patient as I've been. Told him that it doesn't make sense that I haven't been able to use the bike properly since I purchased it, and that the gears are still all messed up.

When I mentioned that the problem was with the gears, he said something along the lines of "well that's normal, the gears eventually slip and need tweaking"... I asked him if it's normal that in 4 times the bike's been "fixed", I still haven't been able to use it to it's potential because of the gear problems... he was trying to dodge the questions.

He refused an exchange and said that the shop will fix the bike properly. I asked him if he has good employees working for him, he said they're the best. I asked him if the bike could be defected from the manufacturer, he said it's impossible.

So I told him that either the bike is messed up, or his staff is useless cause it doesn't make sense that I had to bring in the bike 4 times for the same problem and it's still got that problem. He told me by next week the bike will be in perfect working order.

Let's see what happens

Have you considered taking it to a LBS?

I mean if its a decent bike, and you just have morons working on it, maybe you should take it to someone that KNOWS how to fix it, If you were willing to pay for a better bike, would you be willing to pay to have this one fixed?

under normal circumstances I would, (can't cost more than 40$ to adjust properly anyways), but now I'm taking it personal, and I want the store to do what's right and give me a product that works as it should...

above in red is BS BS BS and a little more BS. It takes some good time for the cables to stretch out and begin working improperly.

I know box stores like wallyworld have taken some decent bike brands and turned them into crap. In high school my friend bought a really nice Mongoose mountain bike, we used to race locally here. A few years later they started selling "Mongoose" branded bikes at wallyworld. They used no-name components, were heavy, shoddily constructed...I'm not sure who bought the name and started making POS bikes under it, but it was really too bad. If a new parent company owns schwinn and is making low-cost product under the same brand name, there's probably a good chance the quality has taken a nose dive for them as well, which would be too bad as Schwinn has a long history as a very respectable bicycle company.
