Hi,

I originally posted this question in the in invertebrates forum but it seems there isnt much activity going on in there. Anyways, I have a 100 gallon planted tank with 8 CRC & 11 neon tetras that has been running for 5 wks now. I have proper lighting & pressurized CO2 system as well. Currently I have a liquid fertilizer called Bio-Vert from a French comany called Prodibio, are you guys familiar with it? Anyways, according to them it contains iron, potassium, magnesium and other trace elements & i needs to be dosed every 2 wks. I also have Flora Gro & Flora 24 from Red Sea. It doesnt mention anything about whether they contain copper or not. If I followed the dosage as instructed, would it be safe for the shrimps? I dosed Bio-Vert once before I added the shrimps but this coming Tuesday its time again. I want BOTH for my plants and shrimps to be safe.

TIA

Even most ferts that do contain copper should be safe for inverts. The concentrations are so low that there's no issues.
:iagree:

If the fertilizer doesn't mention it, the concentration's probably so low that it won't harm the shrimp.

The whole "copper kills shrimp" is really hyperbolized, I think.

If the fertilizer mentions copper in its ingredients, it's probably listed as about 0.0001% of the fert. This is far too little to kill inverts.

IME, CRS and Amano Shrimp don't thrive well in fertilized tanks and tanks with omnivore fish.

shrimp need copper in their diet... just at low levels. there's copper in most micro mixes... just at low levels. everything should be fine if you use something regularly recommended.

when dosed properly traces wont harm inverts. Also, how does dosing once every 2 weeks work when you do weekly water changes?
According to Bio-Vert it says you should use 1 ampoule every 2 wks for 200 liters and Flora Gro (from Red Sea) should be dosed everytime new water is added to the tank. Do you dose with every wc? By the way do shrimps like the wc's? I just changed 40% of the tank's water & all the shrimps (even the ones I hadnt seen for ages) crawled out from underneath the driftwoods & rocks and theyre just sitting there inactive...a few also have climbed up the 3D background sitting a few inches below the water surface. This isnt good, is it?

In most fully planted tanks with CO2 enrichment, you tend to need more trace elements than any suggestions on commercial labels.

I must have several thousand RCS, a few hundred Amanos and I dose very heavily all ferts, KNO3 (45ppm per week of NO3), KH2PO4(15ppm per week), CMS+B+DTPA as Fe as a proxy for all traces at 1.5ppm a week.

I also have ADA AS which is a large source for all these nutrients except N since the sediment is over 2 years old now.

RCS breed like flies, I also have some fire red shrimps and had some higher grade(SS grades) Crystal Red Shrimp in one tank.

Temp seems to be more the the issue for the CRS's than nutrients IME.
I dose rich, a modified EI type dosing routine. I have never found any dead shrimp except for the jumper dried ones on the floor. I net out at least 100 or more a a week of the RCS, they are bullet proof, very easy to care for.
