Hey everyone, over the weekend I've purchased a group of 5 Geophagus Tapajos Red Head and a group of 10 Gymnogeophagus Balzanii. They should be here next week and pictures will be posted when they get here. Has anyone else kept these fish before? If so share your experiences or pictures. I pretty much know all the care requirements for them, I'm just looking to discuss and get more excited for these new fish than I already am haha.

Yeah i would like to get some Balzanii they are cool fish..

I have a school of 10 G. 'Tapajos' orange heads, one of my favorite species. Looking forward to your pics! I got my group back in July 2009 at about 1" TL and I got my first spwn from them 9 months later.

If you want to put size on them in a fairly short time frame ;), feed cut up market shrimp a few days a week, a good staple pellet the rest of the week. I use omega one pellets but allot of folks really like NLS.

Beautiful fish! BTW, I see you have sand on the bottom, would you recommend that for peacock cichlids? I love the look, it is beautiful!

Thanks! I recommend sand over gravel or any other substrate hands down. For eartheaters it's mandatory. For haps and peacocks it depends on if you need to buffer up PH or not that will select your sand argonite/coral based vs PH inert silica based.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

JK47, thanks for the tips for speeding up the growing process. It was my understanding that Tapajos were slow growers, but if they went from 1" to breeding for you in 9 months then what you were doing must work haha

I did my best to find gut content analysis of wild stock and crustaceans are a big part of their diet hence the shrimp. Let me know if I can help out at all, eartheaters is pretty much all I do.
