Seachem Stability?

It didn't cycle instantly. I don't know what else to say. I posted words from Seachem's site and words from a Seachem's representative who acknowledges that their product can take from one to two weeks or more to get the cycle going and it's not because they have the right bacteria in the product... although they may at least have one of the correct bacterias, nitrosomonas but they don't say anything else about nitrospira or nitrosospira. In all likelihood, their product helps but it doesn't instantly cycle a tank... so if folks are stuck with cycling with fish and are having ammonia/nitrite spikes and are doing constant testing and daily or twice daily PWC's, then using a $12.00 product like Dr. Tim's One And Only (or more depending on tank size), which does instantly provide ALL of the right bacteria is a much easier and cost effective procedure.

Seachem makes plenty of fine products, and I use some of them, but Stability isn't one of their shining stars. Same with Hagen's Cycle product. Hagen also makes plenty of other fine products though.

One of the problems that I see in a LOT of fish products is the original product doesn't work as advertised and instead of the manufacturers admitting it by coming out with an improved product, they just keep pushing their old product so they don't have to admit it didn't work... which is what an improved product would admit. Lots of folks have gone through lots of headaches using Stability, Cycle, etc. and then finding that their tanks still were not cycled and they still had to do the daily testing and PWC's... I know.. I was one of them many years ago!

When compared to BioSpira (developed by Dr. Tim) which did work but was more difficult to distribute due to the need for constant refrigeration, which was then improved by Dr. Tim while he was still with Marineland (see the other thread for more details on that) but when Marineland was bought out by a conglomerate, Dr. Tim went out on his own with Dr. Tim's Aquatics and put out the improved version of BioSpira under the name Dr. Tim's One And Only, http://www.DrTimsAquatics.com (click the Fishless Cycling gold button for his article on fishless cycling and a special deal on his product)... or if you've been participating in the other thread, you might have even gotten a free bottle.

I never said stability cycles instantly, I never made that claim on either site... A one week cycle is something we should all be happy over, am I wrong? Are you aware of the circumstances behind my trying this product? (I was a nay-sayer as well, the story is more sad than you might think) You keep circling back to Dr Tims. I have yet to form an opinion on that product because I have not tried it. I have heard good things though. I try to keep my opinion to myself until I try a product on my own. I have no motivation to prove Dr Tims is a lesser product or does not work. I'm glad he participated in a thread here and I'm looking forward to trying his product.. If I have tried a product with good results and a fellow hobbiest could benefit from it, I recommend it to them. The OP asked for experiences and opinions and just as your entitled to yours, I'm entitled to mine. ;)

I prefer one product, you prefer another. Thats a good thing, diversity in the hobby. I am not however making statements about a product not working as you are. Promote a different product all you want but if your going to say a product does not work, due diligence is in order to prove it through public real world testing (pictures and daily results posted etc) not your assumed understanding of a trademarked formulas makeup/ingredients therefore it must not work. If you tried this specific product as you say "years ago", it may have changed since then. My test was in May '10. Only Seachem would know if something were changed. The most common issues with stability I've read are from not shaking the bottle enough as instructed, lengthening the cycle time or keeping it in extremes of either high or low temps, rendering it less-effective or useless. The above issues are gross generalization on my part, based on what I have read.

How about instead of debating with one another or chancing derailing this thread, we team up and do a test thread together? One thing I was missing from my test over on MFK was a baseline for comparison with another product or method (used media etc..). If you like that idea drop me a PM and lets decide some perameters and get it going. I have an empty 10 gallon, I can pick up another and we can compare Stability vs Dr Tims? Or if you have two tanks you can. I'm not partil one way or another.

You seem very intelligent Lenny and I respect the fact your even voicing your opinion and conveying it so well. That will never be a strength of mine lol. Sorry if I sound like a butthole, I'm not trying to be. Just trying to do my part to help out other hobbiests the best I can.

rb... your first link "is not found on this server".

jk... do you have anything definitive?
gl... do you have anything definitive?
(question obviously applies to stability)

i am keeping an open mind. however i'd like to see definitive results prior to making my own mind up... on any particular similar product currently on the market. dr tims product should be reviewed shortly i assume. i'm curious of course to the reports. i'll wait though, logically.

i do however like what hebily had to say... and he's usually pretty reliable from what i see.

I'm glad that link didn't work for someone else too, I thought I was going crazy lol :pc:. Go with Dr Tims. It sounds like there are good results from other members here. The link I gave to MFK was a collection of people using Stability and sharing their experiences with one another. I will admit though is lacking as for as proof for some considering the starting benchmark for Colton and I but none the less are some good and bad comments.

Read my earlier reply for words right from the horses mouth... in this case Seachem being the horse. Seachem admits their product does NOT cycle a tank instantly and purports that it speeds up the cycling process by taking one or two or more weeks... which it may do since it has one of the three proper bacteria but the anaerobic stuff they have in there has nothing to do with cycling a tank. The same goes for Hagen's Cycle and most other bacteria in a bottle products other than Dr. Tim's and so-far, Tetra's SafeStart (which is just a renamed version of BioSpira) but I have a feeling that product will fall by the wayside since they don't have the expertise of Dr. Tim any longer to continue the further developing and improving of the product. The parent company of Tetra bought into the *viable bacteria in a bottle* business when they bought Marineland. Maybe they'll hire some wise people to continue the research.. maybe they won't. Tetra typically markets towards the lower priced end of the hobby... not necessarily towards the highest quality products. Look at all of their fish foods... mostly garbage ingredients in them compared to higher quality foods.

jk... absolutely
lenny... i read your post... and every link... and i don't have much of a tolerance for reading. dr tims product will speak for itself soon enough. either with flying colors or poorly. not much left when the claim is virtually instant cycle. there's ammo the next day or there isn't. anybody with a test kit should have no issues telling the difference. even if the test is flawed there should usually be a notable difference.

on the other hand stability seems to have a slightly different claim. a bit more risky since you have to throw test kit results out the window, throw your fish in and hope you read the directions correctly. however if enough people (quantitative as well as qualitative) happen to experience the same positive results and post them in a manner that is conclusive it would certainly lend itself credibility towards being a viable option in time of need.

we can argue which product is better, become claims adjusters and company reps all we want. if they both do different things and serve the same purpose successfully there's much better chances people can get to something useful. not everyone is going to be able to go to their local store and get a specific product they picked out on the net in an emergency... especially when there's only one choice.

i understand dr tim is a great guy, an exceptional scientist and acclaimed but i think he and his products can speak for themselves shortly if all goes well.

Dun,

You keep acting like Dr. Tim's products are new. They've been out for nearly 10 years and have been not only proven in the hobby but proven in peer-reviewed published studies.

That's one of the reasons I keep bringing Dr. Tim's One And Only up is that in the past month or so, I've seen 3-4 threads about Stability and none of the more advanced members were mentioning BioSpira or rather it's more advanced version, Dr. Tim's One And Only.

The reason people buy Stability or Cycle is to cycle their tanks... but neither product does it nearly as fast as the former BioSpira or the improved Dr. Tim's One And Only.

If you're gonna spend $10.00 for Stability that can take one or two or more weeks.. why not spend $12.00 and get it done instantly... if you're trying to speed it up... then you might as well go all out! ;-)
