Adding to my 30gal tropical community tank

OK first your FILTERS
"Current filtration is a wisperX20 and will be adding or switching in a wisperX45"

The EX20 up to 20gals 110gph
The EX45 up to 45gals 240gph

Now it is always WISE to run atleast DOUBLE the tank size for filtration

Suggestion: If you want to keep more than 1 Molly, minimum recommend male to female ratio is 1:2 (M:F). You will be less likely to experience problem if you get even more females.
Warning: Black Skirt Tetra will likely to fin nip Guppy. Try increasing the number to 6.
Suggestion: If you want to keep more than 1 Guppy, minimum recommend male to female ratio is 1:2 (M:F). You will be less likely to experience problem if you get even more females.
Warning: At least 5 x White Cloud Mountain Minnow are recommended in a group.
Warning: At least 5 x Black Skirt Tetra are recommended in a group.
Warning: At least 4 x Albino Cory are recommended in a group.

I do not live and die by AdAdvisor but I do refer to it.

All mollies are female. I pulled the males out about 2 weeks ago. Add corys to tank, got it. Get 1-2 more Black Skirt tetras as well. All guppies are female. Dumping White Cloud Minnow. AFAIK, you need 6+ neon tetras for them to be happy as well. Thanks.

So, after adding my stock will be 7 adult female mollies, 10-15 juvi mollies, 5-6 black skirt tetras, 8-10 neon tetras, and 4-5 albino corys.

Guppies, minnow, and about half or more of the juvi fry will be going into a dif tank.

Can you post a link to your AdAdvisor thing?

What dimensions are this tank? 40 gallons come in different sizes...

(Also, the title of your thread says 30 gallons)

Sorry for the double post...we posted at the same time :)

what size tank is it? the thread title says 30g and your description in the thread says 40g...

Sorry, I just really want a 40gal tank. I believe it to be 30 gallons.

Dimensions are 24 inches long, 21 inches tall, and 12 inches wide. AFAIK, thats a 30 gallon tank.

ya its roughly 30 gallons then. 26 to be exact

ok, so first off, i have a 20gal for all the molly fry. They have already been moved over, they can breed themsleves to death (hopefully) for all I care, they will be getting a limited food supply to increase fry eating. The 2 guppies and the minnow are also in the 20gal. I used the advosor for a judge, with both filters the tank will be at a 126% stocking level with a 149% filtration level. Thats will 6 black skirts and 4 adult corys. And 7 adult mollies, assuming that I don't re-home or get rid of the mollies currently in the tank. If i add 8 neons and 8 ghost shrimp the tank goes up to a 149% stock level and a 118% filtration level. Thats only a little overstocked, but with more then needed filtration. So, assuming i don't get a 40gal tank, that is the maximume stocking level for my tank.

Ok, so i'm planning on increasing the stock of my 40gal tropical community tank. Current inhabitants are:

*1 large female molly
*4-5 smaller female mollies
*20 or so molly fry of unknown sex
*4 black skirt tetras (these can be nippy, especially in smallish tanks)
*1 albino cory (oh dear!)
*1 minnow (what kind of minnow do you have?)
*2 guppies

Here was what i wanted to add, but im not 100% sure on what will be okay in a tank this size and with the current inhabitants.

*1 Praecox Rainbow (too active for 24" tank, besides they like to school)
*4 more albino corys (yes!)
*some kind of gourimi, maybe pear or sparkling (sparkling or honey gourami could work...but pearls, golds, blues, opaline etc. all get too big)
*4-6 harlequin rasbora (this would be better than the neons)
*8-10 neon tetras (this tank is really too busy for neons)
*Platy-maybe (don't keep just one platy, it will be unhappy)
*Swordtai-maybe (24" tank is too small for swordtails)
*3-4 Blue Mickey Mouse Platy (platies will overpopulate your tank, the same as mollies...I wouldn't add more livebearers, IMO)
*3-4 Long Fin White Cloud (these will get nipped, regular white clouds shouldn't...you should have more flow for white clouds, they love a current)

Adding another filter like you have would be a great idea. There was someone on here selling an Aqueon 30 for $10, that would be very nice to run alongside your Whisper X20.

I wouldn't bother adding any kind of shrimp, your mollies will eat them. Ghost shrimp are only like 30 cents each, so if that's your intent, that's another thing...but really, they will get eaten!

126% is too much and 149% is WAY over stocked. Did you get a warning to get a larger tank under that number? IMO getting a larger tank will be your best option. If you do get a larger tank the minimum size I would suggest is a 40 gallon (breeder is best) but larger is always better.

I found that the filter ratings are a buch of crap. A filter that cycles through 100ghp is usually rated at 20 US gallons. The problem with this is that it isn't cycling through the tank enough and filters slow down after a few weeks in use so IMO a filter rated for 20 gallons is really only good for 10. When planning the filtration for a tank my plan is going for as much as possible. The minimum filtration in my tanks is 10X the tanks volume. So a 20 gallon tank needs about 200gph of filtration and your tank (at 26 gallons) needs about 260gph of filtration which it is not getting. If you do upgrade filtration the best thing would be to run them both but 240gph is better than 110gph.

I respect your opinion, but so far from what I've seen the black skirts haven't been nippy at all. In fact, im worried that they may end up being nipped by other fish. As for the corys, i know i should have more the 1, but its been to hectice for me to get more lately. But im finally able to do this. And with shrimp, my mollies have never eated them, i started with 3 but then 1 accidentally got crushed and when I did a WC another spilled on the floor. Didn't see it until the next day :( but the one that didn't die tragically has been doing fine, plenty of hidy holes and even out in the open the mollies leave it alone. Thats just from my experiance.

well, the "warning, tank is overstocked" thing didn't cme up until i reached a 131% stock level. And with the filtration i have i would think it would be okay.

As for filter power, never looked at it that way. I'm thinking of adding the wisperx45 to the 30gal with the wisperx20. Would that do the trick? If not im ready to get another wisperx45 and put both of them on the 30gal, though that seems like a little to much filtration, but you know best.

So, rasbora instead of neons. got that. So, what i plan on having are

6 harliquin rasbora
7-8 female mollies
4-5 albino corys
6 black skirt tetras
8 ghost shrimp

with a wisperx20 and wisperx45 as the filters. Planted tank, sand substrait. Some rocks. Possible tank upsize as well.
