Adopting an African Grey Parrot

Pet, I used to have a Lory and his vocabulary skills were incredible. If they are the 2nd best, I am imagining the Grey's are doubly incredible. It used to take my Lory about a week to learn something new and spending 3 spans of just minutes during each day. Man I miss that bird!

Funny story about how I came to know all of this as far as the capabilities is when I first got the Lory, I didn't even know he would be a talker until my sister visited one day. She walked up to his cage and said hello, and he said it back... I nearly fell off my seat :)

Again Pet... my best of luck to you. I am sure you will both appreciate each other :)

(you better post pictures!!)
I will definitely be posting pics of the little guy, before it's over I am sure everyone will be saying, "not more bird pics"...LOL

Timneh or Congo? As Parrots go they're a bit needier than most with regards to your attention. And Parrots are the neediest critters around! I find it cheaper to feed my Bluethroat Macaw and Black Cap Caique from my local supermarket. I put together a mix of dried fruits and nuts from the bulk aisle and add in some puffed rice and puffed wheat cereal from the organic section. It's CRITICAL not to feed Parrots the enriched versions as the iron content is too high and can accumulate to toxic levels. And of course anything that's good enough for me is good enough for them (at least that's what they think!) so they eat alot of what I do myself, as long as it's not too salty or sweet with sugar.

Great to hear the news, Pet. I have also really enjoyed reading the stories in this thread. :)

Priest had two parrots and were taught to pray each day and to say the rosary. The birds were quiet and meditated each along with the priest.

This went on for 20 years until a woman saw the parrots. Having two parrots herself, she was dismayed that the birds used foul language all the time. She asked the priest if he would keep her birds next to his in hopes they would learn manners and to be more pious.

The priest agreed and the next day the woman brought in the birds. Upon entering the rectory of the priest, one of his birds started yelling, "Praise God! Hallelujah", "Thank you God for answering our prayers!", The second parrot started jumping up and down and said "Thank you God for finally bringing us some girls!!!"

Great information thanks a lot, I have learned that these birds are comparable to children (almost) as far as the attention they require. I am not for sure if he is a Congo or a Timneh as I just learned the other day that there are in fact two different types, that I will have out find out.

Congos are bigger with a bright red tail.

I want a parrot! *Jealous*

lol.

I hear they are very very smart.

I had a cockatiel years ago. all parrots will eat anything that you are eating, just stay away from things with lots of fat, processed sugar, salt, and chemicals.

Also, be careful using teflon/nonstick cookware in your house. Overheated teflon can release fumes that will kill a parrot. Don't use air fresheners either.

I once made a jungle gym out of branches from the oak tree in my front yard and left the leaves still on it. After I washed it and scrubbed the wood, he had loads of fun picking all the leaves off.

Be prepared to care for a small child for the next 50 or so years. I just don't have the patience for it, but good luck to you :)
