Mildly controversial topic, prestressing fish for shipping

I know I am new, and you are one of the oldest, but why would you do this to your fish just to get a laugh? Nothing like being in a tiny hang on and getting attacked by a giant shark. How could this be a good idea?

I’m sure it would be like a 100 foot tall monster attacking your house. I'm sure the 100 foot guys would get a giggle, but how would you feel?

I’m sure they are ok after this. But why would this be a good idea for the poor little guys?
not my vid i just fix them for the people who havent figured out how to add the vids yet.

Hi. Just to clarify, MGamer did not have anything to do with this post, it is mine, he just fixed the video link that I posted up.

And to answer your question, yes, I would like it if a 100 foot tall monster attacked my house, if that's the precaution they had to take to make sure I didn't potentially poison myself to death in transit.

If you read my thread you would understand that stressing them is a prerequisite for safe shipping, when I originally got these fish, I lost 2 out of the group of 7 in an overnight shipping incident, the fish were packed very well also, so I deduced it down to self-poisoning.

I made light of the situation since I had a few people ask me to post a vid of my process, but as I stated in the OP I don't do the shark thing every time I have to bag these guys up, I normally just pull them out, make sure they are worked up, wait a few minutes, change their water out and then bag them.

Sorry for the miss quote, and replace I'm sure, with I hope, in most places.

So you are saying that you want to "test" kill your fish if that is the stress response before shipping them? Umm? If that is the issue, maybe not shipping the fish?

Maybe working out a deal with the LFS to resell these guys without death would be a better idea?

Sorry but I don't think fish are different than puppy’s as far as treatment. I am not a PETA person, but this is just cruel.

To be fair, if you'd read the original post, the OP brought up the issue of cories releasing toxin while stressed - when in transit, in a small bag of water, this = death. OP is experimenting with performing a water change after, theoretically, the cories have released their toxin - thus raising the chances that they will survive their journey.

I normally don't go to this much effort, I just pull them from their tank, let them sit in a dip n pour, then change the water in it for fresh water after about 10 minutes, just prior to bagging.
I have seen a few threads where people have shipped cories and lost the entire batch - no other issues aside from the "toxin theory". Very sad. Kudos to Jetajockey for having success in shipping his cories... but beware the shark mitt! :uhoh:

So, I did a reread of your post. First off the video is very wrong, bottom line. Second I can see that you are trying to figure out how to breed and ship these great fish.

All I can say is charge more, ship in much larger water volume.

If this is going to last to our grandkids, we have to breed local and absorb the cost of that. Native farming of fish is going to ruin our hobby. And our world.

But abusing fish to see how they react is wrong. And the total industry of shipping fish in tiny bags of water is wrong. I would be happy to buy a fish at 3x the price to know they were bred in captivity and shipped in a humane way. Maybe this is silly of me, but unless we all embrace this idea our kids or grandkids will never see this joy of our hobby.

Sorry to come across as so mean. Crappy day. I see what you are doing and it makes sense, but maybe putting them in a bag with an air stone or something, for a day and moving it around then another before shipping with a larger amount of water? Not sure if this would work but I can’t see how a giant shark is better.

Sorry for the rant, the video just really pissed me off.
