Betta in an aquarium with sand?

by looking at your intake for your hob filter, it seems you have one of those Marina slim filters. IMO, not good filters at all. they take cartridges, which are a joke, and there is no easy way to modify this style of cartridge filter for using a sponge in it instead (because the filter box is so darn narrow).

i tried to mod a friend's slim 15 with just one piece of sponge in the middle compartment and a cartridge in the other ones and nearly had an oveflow out the back of the filter due to the backup of flow against the sponge. used a piece of Aquaclear hob sponge, cut to size.

you've got a really sharp eye. :)
It's definitely a Marina Slim filter 15. It came as part of the aquarium setup.
I'd agree with you that it is not an excellent filter as there's probably better hob out there. However, a little tight with money now after spending around $200 with the new aquarium setup. (everything you see plus aquarium stand, water conditioner and a small quarantine aquarium) all this is the past 1 month.

I was thinking that I could maybe look to upgrade to the marina slim filter 30 somewhere like march next year with some luck.

Got a picture for Day 11 of aquarium setup where I have added 6 dwarf cories.

Good news. Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate all 0ppm. Yay!

Oh by the way. What do you guys/gals use the Hikari Betta Bio Gold Pellet?

I've got Tetra Fresh Delica Bloodworm which I was thinking of feeding the Betta the bloodworm's 3 times a week. Thinking of using the Hikari for the other 3 days. One of cause fast once a week?

Any recomendation on Hikari or any negative comments on Hikari is welcomed? Thanks.

keep a close eye on your ammonia and nitrite readings, because if all of your parameters are at zero then your tank isn't cycled and you will now be doing a fish-in cycle. if your ammonia or nitrite have any reading other than zero you will need to do large volume water changes to keep those readings at zero.

with my various 10 cories, i find they do well with the Omega One shrimp pellets (which i feed two or three times a week), along with any leftover food that gets past the other fish in the tank. other food is Omega One veggie flake, frozen bloodworms & spirulina brine shrimp, and a homemade mix of crumbles.

Sure, been testing it for the past week. Sure to test it everyday onwards till there's a prolong result of 0,0 and <10. Since I've introduced a pre-existing filter media, I'm hoping that all will be ok.

Due for a water change anyway tomorrow so no probs. Also, bout Betta food? Is Hikari recommended?

i've never used hikari food for any of my fish. i really like the Omega One line. i use the floating large cichlid pellets, veggie flakes, and shrimp pellets in pretty much all my tanks, along with frozen bloodworms and frozen spirulina brine shrimp, and a homemade mix of various crumbles (brand unknown, it came to me from a friend). even my betta eats the veggie flakes, and bettas are known to turn their noses up at flakes, lol.

i haven't fed any brand of betta pellets since 2008.

Jeez... bettas eh. Hope they'll go for peas cause I feed all my trops with thawed peas once a week. He/She will just have to starve for the day if it doesn't take the peas. :p

Anyways, not seen the Omega One line in the UK. From your selection, you don't really feed a specific Betta food but seems more general goodness where all trops fishes can eat. Am I right?

In the UK, more common for Tetra, Aquarian, Nutrafin and British King. However, local eBay sellers seem to have the Hikari for Betta products and some other UK based internet pet stores. I guess i'll look around for the Omega One line.

Thanks. Cannot wait to get my hands on the Betta.

exactly, a well rounded diet with all the proper nutritional needs met is better than feeding one type of food.

perhaps Omega One is a north america thing? i buy it in petsmart, which i'm sure you guys don't have over there.

Omega One makes some really nice stuff. I love their betta pellets. I feed those and Sera discus red or blue (depending on the color of the betta.) They also get Cyclopeez flakes, frozen bloodworms and freeze dried daphnia. I do the last two to try and mimmick their native diet as much as possible. I think that is very important for all fish.
I don't truly think the pea thing is necessary at all as bettas are basically full carnivores. They seemed to do just fine for millions of years without Rosebud Brand Frozen Peas, so I see no reason to force them to eat such terrestrial nonsense.

Hikari is average food for premium prices. Far better choices out their for less money. Aside from what I mentioned, Nutrafin makes some fine products.

I've used them all! Anything with tetra on it wouldn't go anywhere near my tanks! Same goes for wardlys. I like hikari, water stays way cleaner! And that is with some serious messy eaters! For frozen san fracisco bay or hikari. Nutrifin is ok, but my fish don't like it so it's out.
