Odyssea CFS 500 Can-filter review and circumference modification

I still stand by my post above. if your not happy with the quality dont order them again and ask for a refund and take your business elsewhere pretty cut and dry and its on topic since you 1st posted your 'childish' feedback comment & you are wrong in the way you handled it plain and simple. your 'fix' efforts are being directed to the seller so yes thats wrong you need to go to the maker. dont they have a company name and address on the box or paperwork?
and that is a no bull**** statement and the last one on this. you can 'borrow' my avatar i think you need it more than i do........just sayin.......Have a nice night and play nice :)

I gave up speculation and assumptions long ago and prefer to be in the know through research and development. The biggest problem with carbon is that most of the stuff they sell for aquarium use is low grade bituminous carbon and the grit is way to small, good carbon is just not fashionable and main stream but other then that the facts that speak contrary to what some argue is indisputable, why relive it.

As far as trying to make something disgusting out of taking advantage of the ammonia that my cats deposited on stored aquarium sand to cycle my tank, well that is truly the pot trying to call the kettle black, 100 fold.

I like the sand. Was it sand marketedd for aquarium usage or was it a "cheap" sand from a hardware store?

Great thread btw. Planning on buying one of these soon.

If I don't have waterproof glue, is it okay if the cuts on the sponges are not perfectly aligned? If not, is it okay if I just cut one sponge and not the other one?

Funny you should mention it becasue I just bought another 100 pound bag at Lowe's a few days ago for $8 (military discount). For now the sand is safe in the bag but once poured out in that container Ill have to cover it this time to keep the cats out, even though they aren't doing anything they weren't meant to....

When you choose to sell a product, you become a representative of that product. That is not just common sense, that is law. If I go to Wally world and by a bad toaster, I don't have to contact the manufactorer, I take it back to Wally World. The simple fact a seller chooses to sell on ebay and not open a brick and mortar store doesn't change this fact. Furthermore, after a seller has been alerted to the fact the product he is selling has manufactoring defects, if he continues to sell the product, what does that say of them?

Caveat Emptor on these chinese knock-offs. Yes, there are a few diamonds in the rough out there, but there is alot of garbage as well. Look what happend to the stealth heaters after they contracted with a chinese company (they used to be made in Italy) to make them.

Has anyone checked on the replacement costs of the impeller/motor assembly on these and if replacement parts can even be purchased?

A little off topic but that is the beauty of both the FX5 and CFS500 bottom motor design, they both have external large threaded bulkheads fittings at the very bottom of their canisters, right next to the existing pump base to allow for the use of an external dry pump like the Ocean Clear canisters that come with no pump. I had already planned that if 1 of my FX5 motors truly bites the dust I may go with a 1200 GPH external pump, goodness knows their flange lid canister design can take the pressure of a much stronger pump lol. Down the road it will be my next MOD The FX5 1200 GPH Supermax.:hypnotized:

Something as simple as an oring swap is cheap. Inconvenient no doubt, but at the same time cheap. I still can't help but think that the quality of the plastic it self could be part of the problem here. Not everyone with this filter experiences breaks, and they most likely all have the same orings on there. I'm not saying the oring theory is wrong, but I don't think it's 100% at fault.
You need to lend your caracter some credibility by experiencing this problem first hand rather then making an armchair ruling. as far as I know all of these canisters are coming with this wrong size larger O-ring which make an enormous difference like trying to wear a shoes one size smaller, but in this case the oversize makes the gate-valves extremely difficult (red faced and shake-straining) to install and remove and as a result would cause damage to ANY plastic over time finally fracturing after a combination of stress and having to being forced. The difference is quite literally like night and day.

Its a great filter for the price so buy one and try the stock Orings and then try my replacement and then make a call on its significance. The answer was very difficult to figure out the solution to problem took quite a bit of careful observation, testing and years of training and experiences in hydraulics and numismatics to figure out.

being a coin collector help you figure it out?

Being an in-flight rocket repairman makes you qualified for anything, including being able to solve problems.

For Gunner, my question: by using the replacement o-rings, would it shorten the expected useful-life of the join as compared to the oversized OEM rings? I think the mods you have displayed are thought provoking and interesting enough that I might order a couple of those CS Filters and do a side-by-side comparison of modded against non-mod. I can't do it within the accuracy you have shown, but it might be fun to try.

numismatics: Numismatics is the study or collection of currency, including coins, tokens, paper money, and related objects. While numismatists are often characterized as ...

Not sarcasm, just confusion ;) does this word have another meaning as well?

nc0gnet0, I suppose if a coin collector or shoe salesmen were handy with tools on the side with a reputation as a handy man, might might have figure it out. But my point is to the privious poster that the o-ring cheap or not is the problem causing expensive damage (hint flooding) and the answer did not fall into my lap.

excuzzzeme, understand as I previously pointed out that the ports coupling design including ID & OD size, thickness and o-ring channels on the CFS500 are identical to the port coupling design on the FX5 with the exception of the lid diameter size it is as if the IN/OUT lid ports were molded from the same casing. This includes the orange gate valves with one exception, the gate valve rotary handles on the FX5 are I believe 1/32" thicker but other then that exactly to the same specifications. Heaving said that the OEM o-rings on the FX5 are the same size as my Mod replacements while the o-rings on the CFS500 are oversize and duplicate the same problems when placed on the FX5 and conversely the CFS500 OEM gate-valvs and ports operate smoothly when using the FX5 o-rings. All of these parts on the FX5 and CFS500 are interchangeable but only the CFS500 OEM O-rings cause the serious binding and crimping when used and any configuration using that bad O-ring the orange gate valves must be forced on which requires a great degree of force not allowing the gate valves to even swivel. So I suppose you could also order the FX5 port O-rings for $13.
