mag 350 mod any good?

Sorry the url is mangled. I did edit and fix it but somehow it has returned to mangled form. Just remove all the extra stuff.

a little flow space between the tube in the center and the sponge itself (while being snug to eliminate bypass at the top and bottom) would also help prolong the life of this mod. will eliminate muck buildup around the intake holes from being in contact with the sponge itself.

so...
longer sponge
tight fitting top and bottom with a small gap in the center for free flow*
and a fine layer for polishing

and this is an absolutely phenomenal mod!!!

*the fine layer around the sponge can be tucked in at the top and bottom to provide the tight seal necessary to prevent bypass.

I have sent an email to my ebay supplier of fluval sponges. When I get it all together I will post with some pics.

Yeah I agree his sponge could be longer. Gunner did you ever glue two sponges together and if so was it acceptable? What glue would work? I think I will try this mod. either with the poret (a little pricey for just modding 1 filter or possibly 2 hydor V's replacement foams glued end to end and cut to the right height. I think the hydor is an open cell sponge. The V size is 4" in diameter which I think leaves room for wrapping with poly.

I used gorilla glue pre-mixed with water as an activator and then strategically placed it in bean size blobs around the perimeter 1 inch deep between the white and black sponge of the CFS500. The gaps that are not glued are not a big concern IF you plane on using a Poly blanket over-rap, but if not then I recommend doing a weld seam with silicone sealer at all sponge joint from the exposed edge inward about the thickens of a weld bead. It will not matter that the seam is closed cell becasue of the silicone since it is only a very small portion of the sponge. But it is important that the water does not spread apart the leading edge of the connected sponge seams and bypass. The only reason I use Gorilla Glue or GE-l Silicone sealer is becasue Its aqua safe and I always have it on hand. There are better sponge glue products out there.

When I do mine Ill be using over the counter giant square block automotive and janitorial tan cleaning sponges that have the irregular open-cell foam and cost about $1 lol.

Like this one below for $0.93

So just a regular very porous sponge would work? I have two Magnum 350's. Once is a pro and one is a deluxe.

With the pro, I don't need to use the bio canister because I have the bio wheels?

I usually run one carbon with the blue filter media and one polishing filter with bio-balls in it.

What I'm reading here is I can remove the polishing filter and the carbon can and blue foam and just use sponges and poly batting? :headbang2:
