mag 350 mod any good?

So just a regular very porous sponge would work? I have two Magnum 350's. Once is a pro and one is a deluxe.

With the pro, I don't need to use the bio canister because I have the bio wheels?
Yes that's the general idea. There is much debate about the effectiveness of biowheels on the net. Some say they are snake oil. Others wouldn't be without them. I plan to use them and make up my own mind. ;)

What is the size on those? That may be the way to go. I haven't yet found a cheap source for a big enough sponge. The ebay guy that I emailed says they don't do custom sizes.
They're pretty large. If you were to cut one in half at the middle and stacked each round end atop one another, it would completely fill a Mag 350 canister after squeezing it inside, almost the perfect size with gap for the CFS500 and since the PPI is irregular mixed with cells pour size ranging from 15 to 40 PPI like a natural sea sponge it should do a good while still providing good water flow necessary for the core of a circumference filter. Its what Im going to try first becasue for under 1 dollar cant beat the price.

I'm going to go try and find sponges today. First the dollar tree, then Menard's then Michaels. I think Menard's will have some sea sponges in the painting area.

I'd like to go longer than 5 days between filter cleanings.

Not to hijack completely but what if I just wrap the chemical filter canister with poly-fill? It'll probably reduce flow a little but I'd get polishing and chemical assistance then right?

I do have two Magnums, I usually run one polishing and one chemical on a single 55g.

If you want to assemble sponge pieces to make one large custom piece, a few strategic drops of pre moistened (water activated) Gorilla glue around the two sponges contact perimeter and a few in the middle will rivet the two sponges nicely and only takes 30 minutes and is safe. Silicone can also be used but takes a bigger weld and take allot longer to cure like a couple days.
