My Fire Red Cherries

Beautiful color on those shrimp! It's probably due to them having all that room to themselves in that gorgeous tank.

Thanks for the compliments on the tank and shrimp. I think a little breeding has been going on! Been seeing a few little red things in the java moss. The shot is not very clear....but you get the idea!

Just a few pics of my Fire Red Cherries. I can't seem to get the tank temp down under 78-80 though with the temperatures we've been having, so I guess I shouldn't expect any babies?

Debs, I had cherries in my discus tank @ 84F and they bred continually.

Is there a difference between fire red cherries and red cherry shrimp? If so I'm guessing you can't have them in the same tank can you?

Naw 79-80 F is great for them. I have mines at 80 all the time. It is one of my favorite tanks to change water on cold days since it warms up the hands! They breed in that condition.

They are the same species. Sakura/Fire Red Cherries have been selectively bred deep red to deep red to keep the color brilliant. There are a lot of red cherry shrimp that hardly have any red coloring to them at all. The Sakura/Fire Red Cherries are more expensive because of the selective breeding. A lot of shrimp don't show their full color until they are close to adults. The Sakura/Fire Reds are red already at a very small size. That little guy I took a picture of today is much redder at that size than a regular red cherry baby shrimp is.

I had no luck with shrimp in this tank when I also kept amano shrimp in the tank. I really believe my amanos snacked on them all the time.

Nice looking tank!

Nice shrimp but GREAT tank, love all those mature crypts! If only I had the patience.....

Thanks RB and myswtsins -- you don't need a lot of patience with crypts. They really grow beautifully with very very little effort! Regular lights, no CO2, no ferts. Basically just leave them alone.
