I have some riccia, and java moss, but there's some duck weed floating in there; would you be interested in some of what I have?

Hi, Mel, I am interested. PM me the info and price please. Also, I am not familiar with duck weed at all, do they take over the riccia? or can i just pick them out?

THank you
Jeff

It's a tiny floater that will take over your tank, unless you have a lot of movement on the surface of your tank. It's good for cover to reduce the light; fish that like shadows and cover benefit from it. I've read that it is good to soak up ammonia and help in that way.

I don't have it in any of my tanks, but I'm growing it along with java moss and riccia in a separate tank.

If you ask opinions here you will get mixed reviews: many love it, many just hate it. Once you have it in a tank it's next to impossible to get rid of it, so they say, lol. I don't think you can pick it out of the riccia.

Let me know what you think. You might want to google it.

Riccia is both fabulous and terrible. Wrapped around rocks or pieces of slate or branches of wood and confined in place with fine netting it is stunning ground cover or "leaves" as it grows out from between the holes in the net. The problem being that it never STOPS growing. It's like a lawn, it has to be tended constantly or it escapes and starts to take everything over.

duckweed on the other hand is OF THE DEVIL. I have orated on this topic before so will omit further detail. Even more than riccia it is indestructible and invasive, on the other hand aside from the quasi-medicinal uses mel mentions it has no redeeming value whatever. Once you get the tiniest speck of it in a tank you will never be free of it again short of cleansing with a flamethrower, and I am not prepared to swear it could not survive even that. It is in the "nuke it from orbit, that's the only way to be sure" category. OF THE DEVIL, I tell you.

With that in mind I have tons of riccia I would happily send you for nothing. A baggie and a 79 cent stamp are not worth the hassle of any payment process. PM me your mailing address and it will be on its way. Probably with some other stuff--not sure if it is java or not as I lose track of plant identities almost instantly, but there will be some other interesting clippings. And duckweed. I come by my loathing of the stuff honestly.

Hi Mel, thank you for the information and I google it and read about it. Yes, I am still interested. Please let me know how to get them from you.

Thank you Xan, I did some research about Riccia, and I would like to give Riccia a try. I am going to try to use it as carpeting on my 140G tank. I might need a lot of them to cover, so may be some payment would help. I'll pm you.

Hi green_valley, I have some trimmings of Brazilian Pennywort that I am trying to get rid of in case you need any other plants aside from moss.

Let me know. My email is jlramir5@asu.edu or simply respond :) thanks.

ROFLMAO! Xan!! Thank you for giving me a hearty laugh this morning. Fantastic! I'm glad you gave a thorough and unequivocal review of duckweed. I, thankfully, have mine isolated in a separate tank, just for it and the riccia and Java moss; I have been looking at it and giving myself time to decide whether or not I wanted to have the life-long relationship with it that I know I will have - should I put the stuff you so eloquently describe as nothing short of SPAWN OF SATAN - in my tanks.

PM'd ya.
