why the rule inch per gallon doesnt work.....

*gasp* those poor babies...

i think Mg makes a very good point here. i've had to educate big box store employees many a time on how the 1 inch per gallon 'rule' is totally bunk, quite often right after they've quoted the 'rule' to customers. if the 'rule' were true, i'd keep my oscar in a 10 gallon. not happening!

Ha! I can fit at least 5 oscars in a ten gallon, maybe more with some creative stacking.

I quoted the one inch rule to a co worker and she promptly went out and bought a 10 inch pleco for her 10 gallon tank. What made it worse was that the guy at the store said it would be totally fine!

The rule isn't that bad if it's applied to fish that max out at 2" or less. It doesn't take activity level into consideration, but as far as waste processing it works pretty well if applied as stated.

Looks like a 240g or so wiht a few hundred ember tetras (H. amandae).
People are constantly asking me if 10 chili rasboras will overstock their 10g, so I do think the thread is relevant.
As much as we all SAY the inch per gallon rule is bunk, I think a lot of people still use it mentally.
you been doing this too long msj lol yes a 240 with 350 ember tetras with more to come.
No, it doesn't. You would never think that the 4in Glass Cat could live in a 10gal comfortably. Or that the 2ft Dojo Loach is fine in a 30. It's always best the find out the species and tank size, because size doesn't matter, activity does.
I try to use that rule + filtration + activity levels. It's worked for me so far.
just have to open your eyes i said this would be over stocked not in a few years if everything grew out...... most semi experienced fish keepers should be able to look at the tank and say no it doesnt looked over stocked it looks empty heck even people just starting out shoudl be able to come up with that as well.

yep. the reason why people still use it is because its easy. same with plants and wpg. people dont learn the basics of stocking.

i bet you never do that again lol

but these fish are under 2 inch and do you think i am over stocked with 350 ember tetras in a 240?

that is one very good point is activity level. where exactly do the fish stay in the tank.

You monster!!??!!! these are your ember tetras??? No wonder the ones I got from you where so happy to go in my 10g. They have so much space!!! since they are only 8inches total in length and my tank is 12 inches. Its like heaven for them!
