i think Mg makes a very good point here. i've had to educate big box store employees many a time on how the 1 inch per gallon 'rule' is totally bunk, quite often right after they've quoted the 'rule' to customers. if the 'rule' were true, i'd keep my oscar in a 10 gallon. not happening!
you been doing this too long msj lol yes a 240 with 350 ember tetras with more to come.Looks like a 240g or so wiht a few hundred ember tetras (H. amandae).
People are constantly asking me if 10 chili rasboras will overstock their 10g, so I do think the thread is relevant.
As much as we all SAY the inch per gallon rule is bunk, I think a lot of people still use it mentally.
just have to open your eyes i said this would be over stocked not in a few years if everything grew out...... most semi experienced fish keepers should be able to look at the tank and say no it doesnt looked over stocked it looks empty heck even people just starting out shoudl be able to come up with that as well. No, it doesn't. You would never think that the 4in Glass Cat could live in a 10gal comfortably. Or that the 2ft Dojo Loach is fine in a 30. It's always best the find out the species and tank size, because size doesn't matter, activity does.
I try to use that rule + filtration + activity levels. It's worked for me so far.
yep. the reason why people still use it is because its easy. same with plants and wpg. people dont learn the basics of stocking.i think Mg makes a very good point here. i've had to educate big box store employees many a time on how the 1 inch per gallon 'rule' is totally bunk, quite often right after they've quoted the 'rule' to customers. if the 'rule' were true, i'd keep my oscar in a 10 gallon. not happening!
i bet you never do that again lolI quoted the one inch rule to a co worker and she promptly went out and bought a 10 inch pleco for her 10 gallon tank. What made it worse was that the guy at the store said it would be totally fine!
but these fish are under 2 inch and do you think i am over stocked with 350 ember tetras in a 240?The rule isn't that bad if it's applied to fish that max out at 2" or less. It doesn't take activity level into consideration, but as far as waste processing it works pretty well if applied as stated.
