I added some new plants to my shrimp tank, did a 15% water change, then left for my puppy's obedience class. Now I'm back home and I've noticed that all of my male shrimp are swimming crazily around the tank. They dont stop, just swim around the edges. The two females are just chillin on a plant. I fed them today, so I dont think they're hungry, and the water params are still all the same. Did a copper test and that is at 0.

Should I be worried about them?

^^ I agree. Mine would do that constantly. The males seem to swim around like sprites all the time, especially compared to the females.

it usually happens if the female released some attractant in the water and the males are going crazy(but i've only seen that with amanos), or they are excited or the water parms. changed;) but they're ok

I have read that it is a sign your females are ready to breed.

Yep, water changes encourage breeding, and male shrimp do laps when the females are ready. Totally normal. =)

Been a few days and neither of my females are berried. Havent had any since the copper fiasco. Our water softner took a dive at around that time though. Tested my pH, and its like 8. Out of the tap too. Shrimp are fine, acting normal, eating voraciously. I dont think that would have been the problem for the males swimming though because its been over a month since the water softner died (landlord is getting around to getting a new one), and they just started doing this a the night I posted. They still swim around, though not as much as that first night.

Been looking into getting a R/O system since I have no clue when the landlord will get a new softner, and I'm wondering if the pH is just too high for them to breed. They are so expensive though, and it will be a few months before I will be able to afford it.

It's actually best not to use water that has been through a water softener. If your tap water is not conducive to your shrimp, you can get inexpensive filtered water from your local *mart store.

If you do switch water sources, don't do massive water changes. It's better to do a series of 10% swaps each week, until your parameters are suitable. Rapid changes will put more stress on your shrimp.

Sounds like you're doing everything right to have some breeders on your hands. Right on!

Thanks! I'll look into that tonight!
