Ugh my petsmart

Your right that's why its a must that the consumer knows what he or she is buying.

I wish more people would do this, but it's often not the case for people new to the hobby or just don't care that much about fish.

This is how I got started with tropheus. Got one from petco many years ago. I threw him in my 125G african cichlids tank, I really liked him, and he did well. Then I learned more about them and I have kept several colonies since then. I currently have a two small colonies in my 90G, again mixed with malawi haps and peacocks. If that petco didn't have a trepheus, I may have never gotten started on them. So, I am glad they carried one.

That's a very cool success story but I have my doubts about the average big box store customer who purchases these fish.

You are probably right. But if you are spending close to $20 a fish at stores like Petco/Petsmart, they have to somewhat serious about fish keeping and fish you are buying, right?

Not neccesarily. I hear people complaining that theyre expensive (insert fish name here) died randomly. I ask them what its in..... A 10g. Are you cleaning the tank? No? well thats your problem. But they refuse to listen..... People are rediculous.

Maybe I'm just assuming too much in regards to how Petsmart is advertising the fish. For all I know they could have the signs with the correct information on how to keep Trophs. But again I have my doubts mainly about the customers.

I went in to my local Petsmart the other day and they too have the new additions as well but i did notice they had care and fact sheets hanging up by the tanks, I was never greeted and 3 employees passed me while i was looking into their tanks and i am pretty sure they have a policy where they are suppose to greet customers and this is why i have not been there in 2 years.. Yeah i did not buy anything as well, you cannot greet me then i do not need to spend my money..

Decided to venture out of the saltwater forums and found this thread. I used to keep a 180 with a group of tropheus moorii moliro. Just wanted to mention that as bad as this is, it is nothing compared to how irresponsible so many Petcos are to marine animals. Complete disregard for a specie's needs while they are in their store.

Has there ever been a petition to form a law against fish cruelty? Because if you keep a dog, cat, horse, etc in crap conditions you can get in all sorts of legal trouble, but nobody cares about fish. Fish are creatures too that deserve just as much respect and care as any other animal kept. Perhaps if there was laws against the poor care of fish people would think twice about craming 10 goldies in a bowl and never clean the tank.

Aside from most people not agreeing, I think a huge problem with that idea is that there is absolutely no way to keep people accountable for that! Livestock, dogs, and cats are generally seen by the public, not kept strictly on someones office desk or in their living rooms. Although I can sympathize with this idea (although on a totally different level). I was livid, my dog was stolen almost a year ago and I remember feeling completely horrified that there weren't more severe charges like there is for horse theft (which is a felony). However horse is a felony because for most people that is a way of life, or in older days a means of transportation. Not to mention the price differences. This is my roundabout way of saying. . . that most people wont agree because they don't put the same value on life and they differentiate between a horse and a dog, or between a dog and a fish. This added to no good way of accountability
