What are you. My thought is that hoarders are unorganized and have messy tanks. I would regard myself as a hoarder and fish keeper, I have a room dedicated to pets and TV and PS3. I have 7 glass boxes with animals. I come home and have my pets feed and run around. Lenny my bearded dragon who is 13 inches likes to do homework with me. He ate my homework literally once, he didn't finish though.

Well, I'm not a hoarder having only one cat and one working fish tank.

But I don't consider myself a fishkeeper, either. To my mind, that term implies in my mind having multiple tanks, possible a fish room, maybe breeding set-ups, etc. My fish are really just my "wet pets."

I think fishkeeper just means anyone who keeps fish...which you most certainly do! I'm not sure what to call the other type of person, a fish expert? A fish collector? There should be a term, generally people who keep fish in this regard breed them, so...a fish breeder? (Even if breeding is not their specialty)

The fish tanks aren't the hoarding problem, it's the junk that comes with them. Like mechanics, it seems like it takes a lot of space and organization to keep your hobby tidy! I have a bathtub in the guest bathroom and it is full of filters, media, tubing, nets...ugh. I have cleaned it out multiple times, but it always just builds back up again. I am pretty ashamed of it, thankfully it's got a dark shower curtain ;) The large shed is also 1/2 fish stuff, 1/2 actual shed stuff...the gas powered tools go in a separate smaller shed.

Well, I don't really know what to call myself. I just refer to myself as a fish addict. I am so addicted to fish and I can't have enough of them. Just like any alchoholic or any other addiction.

A hoarder is someone who's life is thinking about fish and just needing more. I try to pace myself, I take an hour out of my day and feed our pets, they are what I do besides the fact I am on 2 soccer teams and go I school. Fish are my hobby

I think also hoarding implies that quality of life is an issue because the situation has become unmanageable. Most of us don't fall into that category, although I do see people on here who appear to purposely downsize in order to avoid reaching this point.

Agreed with above, hoarding = messy tanks and 1/2 alive fish with overstocked tanks. Walmart is a fish hoarder, some petsmarts and petcos are like that too.

I agree that animal hoarding of any kind involves having more animals than you can care for, always acquiring more, and refusing to give any up even when they are sick and neglected. My only experience with this is watching those TV shows, but it seems like the hoarders are in a state of denial about how bad things have gotten.

I think there's a big difference between actual hoarding and just being a fish nut. As long as you are responsibly taking care of your fish and each has an appropriate home then I don't think that's hoarding. Obsession, maybe? I had 7 fish tanks in my room when I was a kid. Only as many as I could take care of though. Now I have 5, and I don't get more because these take about as much time as I can spend on them. Of course I am constantly thinking of what fish I want to have someday. But only when I have the space and the right set up.

Bingo Nicole...it is hoarding when we start to see negative consequences from "hunting and gathering".
