My visits to the LFS's...

When people ask me how old I am I tell them 12!

Use crushed coral and prepare for the consequences.

I agree with the above, use dry base rock and buy the rest live to seed.

I've heard of the synthetic live rock and have no experience with it.

The LFS guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Do NOT get crushed coral. Stick with aragonite sand (1-2" depth). Bare-bottom is fine, too...but it just doesn't look as good, IMO. I also have to agree with RNeiswander concerning the LR. Get a couple of nice looking 'primo' pieces of LR and save some money by getting dry/base rock for the rest.

Thanks for warning me, you saved me many hours of substrate change. Ive been thinking about seeding.

I will try to not go there again. (it was my first time there...)

My parents thank you as well...

For the record I am buying everything for this tank except for 100 dollars (my b-day present :) ) I will be doing LOTS of yard work/ eBay for money.

Back to the original question...

Which should I buy?

A) rock that is solid but costs a bit less

B) rock that is a little more expensive but has a lot more surface room

Look on bulk reef supply, any rock on there will do. Eco saver is nice and cheap. Its free of excess nutrients too.

They have really good prices. Shipping is a lot though, but it's still cheaper than at the LFS's.

How much should I start* off with. If I need more I can get more later.

Will it help to have a bare-bottom?

Just do the sand bottom.

Anywhere between 50 to 100 lbs should be good. You can add pieces later if you need to.

You can get CaribSea South Seas Base Rock at 69.99/40 lbs with free shipping at Drs Foster and Smith.

I think that I will buy as much as possible from 1 source. I also have 45 dollars in petsmart gift cards, I will use those for a heater and a circulation pump if I'm lucky.

the Caribsea at Drs Foster and Smith sounds like the best deal. Free shipping is always a plus. Like the others said, then seed it with some nice local stuff.
