Hey all!

So I finally got my DIY CO2 up and running. It's been running for about a month and all is well. However, the only thing I'm noticing is that the plants are growing, but not coloring up. Now, I know that you need intense light and a lot of CO2 to achieve that nice red color in plants, but I've been running it for about a month now and still haven't seen any results. Any suggestions?

Here's the setup:
2 2L soda bottles
-These have airline tubing coming out and have no CO2 leaking out (I believe, I'm not sure how you can check exactly, but I'm 99% sure it's making CO2 and not leaking). They have check valves and run into a T-valve. The T-valve connects to the
1 1L burp bottle
-This is my reasoning for why I'm sure it's making CO2. There are bubbles coming from the airline coming from the T-valve. Sometimes there is also condensation on the bottle, and sometimes when I shake the yeast bottles, bubbles come out rapidly from the airline.. This leads to the
Filter intake
-It's an AC 50 Filter. It goes into that little hole where the intake is and into the powerhead on the AC. I hear the CO2 coming into the filter (there's these little squirting sounds) and I assume it's being poured out into the water. I heard that filters can decrease surface area, so it can cause a major loss in CO2 production. Is this my problem? Do I need a new method of diffusion?
Recipe:
-2 cups sugar
-2 teaspoons yeast
I change the solution in the bottle every 1-2 weeks, and stagger changing the mixture in the bottles between weeks. I put
the yeast in a small plastic container with some warm water and stir it with a fork for one minute, then let it sit for the next for 5-8 minutes. I fill up the bottles around 2/3 full with warm water, pour in the 2 cups of sugar with a funnel, and then the yeast. Then I cap it, shake it until everything is diluted, and plug it back in again.

Am I doing something wrong with my recipe???

Lights are T5HO's, dual fixture, high light, 39watts each, ~12 inch depth. The reason I needed the CO2 in the first place was because I had too much light, therefore more CO2. I also wanted some more growth and nice coloration.

Anything off? I stopped doing the CO2 2 days ago because I want to figure out what's going wrong. Do I need more CO2?

Thank you for all the help you have given me! I appreciate your response :)

I would never recommend using a HOB with DIY CO2...the surface agitation may be releasing the extra CO2 you're attempting to add to the tank water.

Which plants do you have? Not all have the ability to produce the red coloration.

Are you dosing ferts at all?

No, I am not dosing ferts. I was originally, but Flourish Iron and Excel got too costly in the long run, so I don't dose ferts anymore. Do you recommend any fertilizers that would work and are low-cost?

Ludwiga repens and arucata, I've seen that they grow really red (both from pictures and people's tanks). Also noted that rotala rotundifolia grows really pink/red but I'm not getting that either. I was wondering why.

Lighting may also be a reason why you are not getting the reds and pinks.

You can try ROOT tabs

A GREAT vendor on this site is http://www.bobstropicalplants.com/shop/en/?cPath=41 Bobs, you can go the Dry Fert route. Now there is a cost up front, but these ferts will last you at least a year or more.

I second this. I just recently ordered some root tabs and dry ferts from Bob's. Great prices and service. Dry ferts are far cheaper than liquid ferts and very easy.

Probably not "Lights are T5HO's, dual fixture, high light, 39watts each, ~12 inch depth" Nice lighting. BTW, I didnt see the size of the tank mentioned?

It looks pretty cool! A little bit expensive, but if it lasts for a year that's a total deal! Maybe I'll ask for it for my birthday :)

Thanks! 40 Gallon Breeder, 36x12x16, or something like that. I think it's more of a 12 inch depth since I overdid it on substrate with 4 inches of gravel :O
