Another couple of cool features of one my favorites thus far, the Hydor Theo, is that the adjustment knob clicks for each degree so it's easier to raise or lower the the desired temp. instead of of some heaters where you adjust the knob and sometimes it turns a little and sometimes it turns a lot and you have to keep checking it every 30 minutes or so to make sure you didn't accidenttaly crank the temp up to 90deg.

Also the Hydor Theo has a built shut off so if the water level drops below a certain point, the heater will turn itself off. Other heaters have that feature too, such as the Jager, but along with the 1 deg clicking of the control, it's just a nice heater for the money.

I've become a big fan of the Via Aqua Quartz heaters.

Eheim Jager

Just a solid dependable heater that will last a LONG time. They've been made for decades and have always been the most reliable.

8 of them in the fish room running right now. Got 2 20H's at Petco $1/gallon sale to finish the room and will be ordering 2 more.

for an inexpensive glass heater, i will always go with the Elite brand. the ones with the blue 'golf ball' looking top. been using them since 2008 and have never had one fail.

for a 55 gallon, i'd go with two heaters, with the wattage needed for the tank divided between the two heaters. disperses the heat better without overworking either heater, and if one should happen to fail (off), then your tank won't cool down too much.
