I have used Purigen for yrs and not only is it rechargable and works for yrs but, IMO, no aquarium should be without it.

I just put in my first purigen into both of my aquaclear filters yesterday, and my water looks amazing. I have a goldfish tank and my tap has high chloramines, so ammonia help is really important. Can't attest to that yet, but from what I've heard, I don't have any doubts.

Ditto!

As I mentioned in an earlier reply, I haven't really used chemical media in my tanks. But now two of you have made the very bold claim that "no aquarium should be without (Purigen)" So I have to ask...

What added benefit does Purigen offer if your tanks are already established & healthy, don't smell, and have crystal clear water?

I'm not asking to try and discount it's abilities, but because I'd be willing to consider it if there was a benefit. Anything that can be recharged instead of replaced is worth looking into.

Go to seachems site. They explain it better than I ever could.

Well, I never actually made the claim that 'no tank should be without it.' I don't actually use it in all of my tanks all of the time (the heavily planted ones). I simply agree with fshfanatic's use of Purigen as a chemical media and, like him, I've been using and recommending it for yrs. It's a great product for sure and along with a good water-changing regimen, is my first line of attack in improving water quality issues. I do use it religiously in my SW setup.

Purigen is the product you're seeking. IF you are patient and willing to read the re-charge directions and follow them.

If you don't follow directions well you'll add bleach into your tank.

I expect to have a lot of Cory's and Rainbow fish and a couple of Dwarf Rams, maybe a Gourami. Will they be OK with crushed coral? What about ghost shrimp though? I really like my ghosts.

How high would coral push the dH?

So I am trialing some Purigen on my tiny quarantine tank.

Its only 2.5 gallons so when I recently added a couple of fish the chemistry went out of wack. I'll be able to see if purigen takes "the edge" of the chemistry while the BB catches up with things. The only problem is the filter is too small to fit the bag of purigen inside so I have it draped over the sponge filter. I'm not sure how effective this will be, but it should be getting a little water flow through the bag.
