Best chemical filter media

I'm big on a nice worn in pair of blue jeans, but i'm good in comfortable khaki.

Haha..lol. thank you.

I've also been looking into this very topic. Added 12 new fish to my 46 and a week later the water got kind of cloudy. Parameters are good, i do water changes, etc. so i figured let me try Purigen. I put it in tonight. I'll report back if i notice a change. From what i hear it can improve overnight. We'll see!

How is this working for you?

In this case cloudy water is most likely a bacteria bloom of decomposition bacteria. This most often happens when there is a sudden increase/excess of of organic waste. Purigen may help, but assuming you are not over feeding, this type of cloudiness usually goes away in a couple of days.

So now i can report back. In 48 hours i noticed a massive improvement in clarity. Between today and my initial post, i can say without a doubt that i have zero cloudy water. Whether or not it was the Purigen or a now gone bacterial bloom, i'll never know. I do know i can see clear across the length of the entire tank without the haze. Either way, i'm glad whatever filter maintenance i did worked out well.

So I am trialing some Purigen on my tiny quarantine tank.

Its only 2.5 gallons so when I recently added a couple of fish the chemistry went out of wack. I'll be able to see if purigen takes "the edge" of the chemistry while the BB catches up with things. The only problem is the filter is too small to fit the bag of purigen inside so I have it draped over the sponge filter. I'm not sure how effective this will be, but it should be getting a little water flow through the bag.

I got a good deal on some rainbow fish so there is now a total of 8 fish in the tiny QT - not ideal.

I rigged a temp filter in an upside down flower pot with a bubble and the bag of purigen inside. After a day I expected the ammonia to be very high since, as I've mentioned before, the tank is only partly cycled. Not so, ammonia nitrates and nitrates were closer to zero than the next value up on the color scale. It has to be the purigen working since the bag has started to show discolouration, and if it were due to the BB then at least the nitrates would be high.

So, I believe that I'm a purigen disciple too.

On a related note, the rainbow fish are showing signs of fungus or possibly bacteria, most likely from the stress of all the handling and the small tank so late last night I bought a 10 g QT and transferred everything to that. I tried to get most of the BB transferred too by squeezing out the filter cartridge and also moving across the sponge filter. I am treating with melafix/pimafix so I have not included any carbon filters but I have retained the purigen (now placed inside the (larger) hob filter). I hope I'm doing the right thing since I should remove the purigen too. If the fish dont show signs of improvement soon, I'll assume the purigen is removing the medicine and remove the purigen, then rely on daily WC to keep the chemistry OK. However WC are also not recommended during treatment.
