I am thinking about adding a apple snail to my new aquarium.
I know they are prolific breeders, so I plan on adding only one.
What are the pros (if any) and cons of apple snails?
Will they eat my plants?
Thanks!

Even if you add only one snail, females can hold sperm for 6 months. However, apple (mystery) snails lay their eggs above water only so population is very easy to control, unlike other snails (MTS, ramshorn, etc.)

Mystery snails are not apple snails. Apple will eat plants, mystery wont. your probably looking at mis-labeled mystery snails unless your in a state where apple snails are legal (fl)

The 'giant apple snail' (p. Caniculata) eats live plants and its illegal to ship in the U.S.
Mystery snails which are commonly referred to as apple snails (p. Diffusa) are sold in pet stores and only eat dead plants.

pretty much ditto what Austin said. Btw, giant apple snails aren't legal to shop into Florida either, they are considered a big invasive pest because they displace a similar native species.

They cant be shipped interstate but can be sold (or you can find them locally at rivers)

Okay, I was confused about the names as well.
I live in TX, so the one I am thinking about purchasing must be the mystery snail.
I'm glad they don't usually eat plants b/c I have a couple plants in my setup that are doing quite well.
Thanks!

I have 3 mystery snails in my tank, I have had them for a few months, and I have only seen eggs once, but it's pretty hard to miss. They snack on lettuce and leave my plants alone, but they don't do much about algae though.

Mystery snails (P. Diffusa) are in fact an apple snail, the same as P. Canaliculata and Spixi's. www.applesnail.net is a great resource.
