Estimating fish size?

Does anybody else have a hard time with it? I sold my indo datnoid about 2 months ago for 75$. I listed him as 8", somebody buys him overnight, emails me the next day and it turns out he's slightly under a foot long. And of course we all know about my monster bn . This is why I wasn't surprised at all when people told me he looks 5", he actually is standard length wise. With fins he is 6".

Nope....I pick the fish up and measure it...or put something in the tank of known size and do a comparison...

I usually put the tape measure next to the tank, and I usually get a close estimate...

I hold my hand up to the tank, sometimes both, and see where the fish goes to.
