Ever hav fish disappear w/o a trace?

Yeah but Mantis Shrimp are messy and can leave pieces behind. Brittles make it all go away!

I've never found anything from a fish taken by a spearer. A smasher, yes, but the spearer in my tank has 'vanished' three fish with nothing left. Granted, the CUC might be aiding and abetting.

Kno Ive got a few brittle stars in tank, see some of their long arms extending from rocks. Maybe they the culprits

They're called Green Brittle Stars!
I finally got to see a fully grown one of those recently at one of the LFS's in the area.

Those are probably mini-brittle stars. They usually clean the rocks and grab whatever small food drifts by.
The ones that'd make something disappear quickly (assuming it were already dead) would be the bristleworms. They move fast and work quickly.

Definitely hav bristle worms, alot more than used too hav. Bout 15yrs ago, I used to consider them worst hitch hikers, heard they'd kill my polyps and feather dusters. But I haven't taken much action to control them in current reef, and polyps fine, even hav feather dusters (I never added) popping up in quite a few spots. Worms not harming. They sure will swarm any dead or uneaten food! Beneficial IMO

You could have a mantis shrimp, they love to to kill things and go into hiding for months, only to be seen at night for a split second!

Also it could be a really nice clean up crew, those tend to clean up real quick leaving you clueless

More commonly though it took a giant leap of faith and is hiding somewhere around your house behind a dresser. i had a fish jump once couldnt find it after i tore my tank apart and a week later my room smelled like dead fish and it was awful. found him across the room behind a dresser... no idea how they get where they do when they jump.

Unless you have an octopus tank, they like to crawl out of their own tanks go into other ones grab a fish and go back into their own tank over night... odds are that isnt the case though ;)
