It's one of those situations where habitat biologists are struggling to identify what is negatively impacting populations, both in diversity and healthy. Contaminants in the water is a big one, but so are invasive species, changes in habitat, shrinking ranges, migration routes being interrupted, and disease. This world will go on, but there are a lot of things that will change in the coming decades and centuries. We can't say where things will go because there are just too many variables--those we know about and those we haven't thought about.
