Multies VS filter

I have a colony of 10 Neolamprologus multifasciatus in a 20 gal long. When I got it from a friend it had 2 Aqueon 30 filters on it and he suggested sponge prefilters on the intakes because of all the sand being constantly piled around the intakes by the multies (they seem to want to bury one of them...sigh...). The Aqueon filters have since basically died (hate those things) and I've replaced the all the way dead one with an Aquaclear 30. I have a prefilter on it currently, but since the intake is considerably shorter than on the Aqueon I was thinking about taking it off as it does slow down the filter flow. I can't say they'll NEVER spit any sand on the intake tube, but with it being higher it should be rare. Will the Aquaclear be able the withstand occasional bits of sand??? Any help is much appreciated.

*going back to watching the multies "rebuild" the tank...again...*

Sand will ruin the impeller on HOB filters. Keeping the intake halfway up the back of the tank will help. Having a sponge on the intake will also help. But, I would get a canister. No need to worry about sand if you have a canister. They cost more, but are worth it.

You may have too much sand in the tank.. When i kept and bred Multi's i would only do about an inch deep sand bed..

An AC Filter will be ruined by sand. I had mine ruined by sand about a week ago. Doesn't take much. That's with it having a pre filter on the intake. Either try going with the canister like suggested by chevelle or reduce the sand like Pittbull suggested. Only other option would to be going with sponge filters which have no moving parts to ruin.

Agreed, I had too much and they just piled it up around the sides of their shell pit anyways...

I too would recommend a prefilter. I put them on any filter I mix with sand as a substrate.
