If a DP is too small to see, a betta might be a better bet than a smaller fish.
otherwise yeah, they should be fine in a little school, or galaxy rasboras would be similar and a little easier to find.

to go with a betta (assuming splendens) I would personally try to find one from a breeder. I don't know any stores in north jersey that would sell anything other than asian farm-raised (But It's not something I'd personally look at or into either, I've just not seen anything declaring that). I know that there are frequently Bettas in the North Jersey Aquarium Society monthly auctions.
Another option would be one of the more peaceful betta species, that can be kept as pairs in an aquarium.

I work in a pet store myself and the deltas and crowns we get in a young while we get old breeder veils... Why is that.
whatever sells, whatever is ordered, whatever is available.
getting something from a breeder will mean the fish hasn't gone through the normal stresses of being shipped, or spending an extended amount of time in a small bag or cup, it leads to less stress and healthier fish.

the bettas we get go into cups that have bubblers in them, with a LED light under each cup, which is nice. We bag them when people buy them, makes it easy on them...

Why do they have bubblers? Bettas are labyrinth fish... I mean, circulation of water may be better, but they breathe surface air xD
