Background: I have had freshwater aquariums all my life except for the past 10 years. I am now back into the hobby with a 16 gallon and a 55 gallon. Both are low-tech. The 55 gallon is fully planted and dirted with low dose liquid ferts. The 16 gallon has bunch and floating plants. Both are healthy and thriving.
Parameters: Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates between 5ppm and 10 ppm. PWC: 2 times per week equalling 25%. pH: 7.6 Temp: Between 76.3 and 78.2 depending on time of day. Both have HOB filters with no carbon.
Community Members 16 Gallon: (1) Violet Elephant-Ear Butterfly Male Betta named Adonis; (5) Adult Ghost or Grass Shrimp with (1) Juvenile, (2) Nerite Snails, (7) Black Neon Tetras.
Community Members 55 Gallon: (4) Albino Glolight Tetras, (9) Regular Glolight Tetras, (9) Neon Tetras, (6) Harlequin Rasboras, (4) Adult Three-lined Corydoras with (2) Juveniles and (1) Fry, (1) 2 3/8" Calico Bristlenose Pleco (4) Pristella maxillaris X-ray Tetras; (2) of them are in the Hospital Tank. (3) Nerite Snails, (35+) and growing Red Cherry Shrimp Colony.
Current Illness & Disease Concerns: (I have attached photos).
It has been 33 hours since the first treatment of Tetra Fungus Guard. Their website mentions malachite green and formalin. http://www.tetra-fish.com/aquarium-information/aquarium-fish-diseases-how-to-spot-them.aspx Their ad and the box states:
History of Issue: It all began when I bought 8 Harlequin rasboras. They all appeared to be healthy. At the time, I did not have the extra 10 gallon tank. I was watching for ich and had Kordon ICH Attack on hand. It is really beneficial and works well for me. Within the first 24 hours, the Harlequins were breeding. The next morning, I discovered I had 1 HR missing. I looked everywhere inside and outside the tank. I did not see any congregations of shrimp or snails. I did not smell death or anything foul. It was never found. This was May 27th. Two days after purchase, 1 Harlequin rasbora started staying at the surface, later in the day gasping for air. I ended up netting it as it was struggling to stay at the surface. I saw nothing visible with the naked eye. It later died that day. Two days after this, I had one Pristella maxillaris do the very same thing. I found it dead at dawn the next morning. Again, there was nothing to see on the exterior. Their colors looked normal, no wounds or lesions or frayed fins etc. That’s when I bought the 10 gallon emergency tank that I’ll use for sick fish and quarantine.
On June 1st and 2nd, I noticed like loose skin around the head/face of one of the remaining 4 Pristella maxillaris. I couldn’t quite tell if it was scales coming off or skin or both. Now and then he rubbed/flashed on things. I put some Kordon ICH Attack in the main tank for about 4 days.
The next thing I saw was a dull white patch on his left cheek area.
By the next morning, it appeared to have hairs sticking out of it. They did not move or appear to be parasites. I researched so much and all I could come up with is Saprolegnia?
I separated him and one other Pristella maxillaris because it was not eating properly and staying away from his group. He started hanging around the surface more than usual. This last photo shows the affected X-ray Tetra from the rear and was taken just a couple of hours ago in the Hospital Tank.
I have 1T aquarium salt, 1/3 of a large Indian Almond Leaf and we are at about 33 hours since I introduced the Tetra Fungus Guard. I have never experienced anything like this. I feel so bad for him. He is not eating and neither is the other X-ray in with him. I also have a few live plants in their tank along with plastic ones, a HOB Filter without carbon, and a long air-stone to increase oxygen. They seem to be just hanging out, biding their time. Will Tetra Fungus Guard work on this or should I try Methylene Blue or something else? I also have Maracyn and Maraycn 2 if you think that might help after the 4 day Tetra Fungus Guard treatment. Any input is very much appreciated. I want to save these fish!
