Apistogramma food

Hello! I have a new apistogramma male that I bid for at my local fish club. He is in a 40 gallon tank with a lot of other non aggressive small fish, live plants, wood caves etc. I'm not planning on breeding him, just want him to be happy and healthy. All my fish get Hikari microwafers, sinking wafers, fancy guppy granules and seem to do well.
I read that apistos like live foods, which I don't have. I was going to my LFS today to buy some frozen daphnia but then read that they're not that nutritious! Also, some folk said that NLS pellets were better.
I'm a bit confused. I'd appreciate any feeding advice you can give me.

I think daphnia is very nutritious. NLS pellets and some flake food is good too. See if he eats it or not. Some pics of the Apisto will help also.
 
Always try to feed a variety; flake, pellet, frozen brine shrimp, frozen blood worms, frozen dahnia, frozen mosquito larvae, etc.

Probably fresh daphnia is very nutritious, not so sure about frozen! I will try a variety and see what he likes best. Thanks

I do not see the difference between frozen and live. IMO, they are almost the same. But I agree, variety is always best.

With live you are in control of the nutritious value. Take a feeder comet for example: buy from LFS and feed it right away will be a lot less nutritious than to feed the comet yourself for a few days in seperate tank with good quality food. With frozen you don't have that choice.
 
With Daphnia though it is very easy to see what is healthy/nutritious and what isn't. Poorly fed Daphnia will have a black "saddle" on their back that is easy to spot even in the frozen cubes (I've seen it a few times in the San Francisco Bay packages. Well fed Daphnia will be red/dark pink in color.
 
I try to stay away from frozen lately, too many stories on the quality.
My apistos love anything New Spectrum on the smaller size, never a problem.
