Very cool idea. My problem is, well I'm too busy breeding different stuff and goofing off to do something like that. My 55gal native tank has been ready to be started three springs in a row. So far I got the tank, had it when I decided to do the natives. Just have not gotten further.

Just curious, won't the sand be rough on the filters?

No, because the circulations are different. The sand waterfalls are driven by dedicated lift tubes run by an air stone. The sand flow is designed to return to the base of the lift tube for another trip. This circulation is not intended to be anything but decorative so a separate filter is in use on those tanks.
