What's the best canister filter for the money?

Hi guys.

My (almost new) canister filter stopped working today. I plug it in, nothing. I'm not sure what the cause was, I did everything properly, never let the air get into the impeller, etc.

The canister filter is covered by a warranty but I'd just like to get a new one. It's a no-name brand made from cardboard-like plastic and I just don't feel confident about leaving this thing on while away from home anymore. Especially when I'm sometimes away for business for several days at a time.

My aquairum is about 55 gallons. My budget for a new canister filter is about 200USD, since ridiculous shipping laws in my country will double up the costs. I don't really have a choice to buy an aquarium filter locally.

Reading around I've come across this: https://fishtankclub.com/best-canister-filter/ . I'm not sure which one from that list would be my best bet. The SunSun filter sounds perfect, but I'm worried about it's durability. A Fluval is out of the question because of it's high price.

Has anyone here had experience with canister filters, and could you recommend a good model to me (which I could buy online). I'm looking for something as leak-proof and safe as possible for that price.

Thanks!

I LOVE my eheim 2215's. I have had 2 running on my 46 bowfront for years. They're awesome. They're silent. They WORK.

A $200 budget gives you a bunch of great options. Like said, Eheim classics are great, as are API Filstar units.

If you want a lot of canister filter for little money, Sunsuns are great. I have two Sunsun 302's in service that I love. These can be had for $39 shipped to your door. The much larger 304B is about $70 shipped. I also have a Marineland C360 that would be OK, if not a bit on the big size for a 55g.

If you are not in the US, is it possible to buy something and have it delivered to you from anywhere?

Really, I would take that into consideration before having to buy a filter from the US and then to double that amount to have it shipped to you.

Can a single Eheim 2215 filter support a 55 gal? Perhaps a 2217? I've heard nothing but good things about it too.

Have you ever had a SunSun filter leak or break easily? I ask because I'm basically ready to order one, they're extremely cheap... But if it breaks it's more expensive for me to return it than to buy a new one :p

I'm not in the US, and I can order stuff from pretty much anywhere. But it gets taxed extra on the border, usually ~1.5x to 2x. If it's a particularly heavy item with additional shipping costs, I'm not sure if it'll drive the cost up. I've never ordered something as big as a canister filter.

Natty, I have had zero issues with my Sunsun canisters. One of my 302's has been in service for 4yrs, the other only a few weeks. The 4yr/old one is still on all it's original O-ring seals. I carefully wipe all the sealing surfaces down with a damp paper towel and apply silicone grease (Plumber's grease) every time I open them up, which isn't often. About every 3-4 months.
