How do I get rid of this!

Well, if anyone read my post yesterday they'll know I had a medicated tank. It's the nasty stuff that causes a "harmless green color" in my tank. It said after the treatment was over to do a 25% water change and add the carbon back to the filter. Well, since it was the wrong medication anyway and the girl at the pet store gave me directions which over medicated my fish, I did a 50% water change and then add the carbon back to my filter last night. I was hoping this icky green color would lighten up just with the water change but it did not, so then I was hoping to see improvement this morning after 12 hours of filtering. But no change.

How do I get rid of this disgusting color???? It looks like nucleur waste! (and is obviously just about as toxic, I've lost two perfectly healthy fish to this stuff)

What you have said is the reason why I do not like this stuff. It is very strong medication and it seems that some fish are very sensitive to it. I also have lost perfectly healthy fish to this medication. It kind of defeats the purpose of using it in the first place since the idea is to save your fish. Whenever I have used this med. I did more like a 50-60% water change followed by extra carbon being run in the filter. If the filter has a special compartment to put extra media or meds.this is the place for the extra carbon. Otherwise you can put some activated carbon in an unused nylon stocking and hang it in the tank by the filter or airstone so water is passing through it. I also changed the carbon out for new carbon in a couple of days since the use of activated carbon diminishes after a very short time. I would do another sizable water change as well to try to get more of this out of the water. Your fish will appreciate the cleaner water and will literally be able to breathe easier. The green color even with the extra carbon and the water changes will probably be there for a few days but you should start to see clearer water soon where the water will still look tinged green. If that happens there is nothing wrong with doing another water change even if it is every day until the green color is gone.

Good luck with it.

I used a nuclear waste treatment recently as well. Once I added fresh carbon to the AC50, it started clearing up almost immediately and by morning was sparkling, crystal clear. Maybe with your extra dosage, you need another carbon change?

you should try maybe raising your temp and good water changes from now on and stop using chems to treat your friends
i have not used a single chemical for at least a year or two now and have not had a single issue and i sleep better at night knowing my fish arent in a chemical bath

ditto..but I'll add to lower the temp a bit if there is bacterial infection..bacteria thrive in warmer water.

what 'green' stuff did you add?

I have used victoria green with formalin and salt in the past for heavy ick infestation..it was in a quarantine tank. but even so all I did was 25% then 2 days later another 25% added activated carbon and it cleared up within a few days.

The medicine I used was an API brand, something like Super Fungus Cure or something, I threw the bottle out so I don't know for sure but it was for a fungus (which I don't even have, thank you pet store lady).

I think I am done using chemical treatments. In all the time I've ever had fish, this is only the second time I've had sick ones (must've gotten lucky, I know!), and both times that I've "treated" them to try to help them I've ended up killing some of them! That's some treatment! I hope my doc doesn't give me that treatment the next time I'm sick!

I will continue to do water changes and also add some fresh carbon. Thanks everyone! :)
