It's my heater isn't it?

You have way too many heaters on that tank. If I read correctly it is only 75 gals. One 300 watt is more then sufficient. I suspect you may of had a problem with "Duelling heaters".

nope I was asking if I put two 300 watt heaters would I have too much. I had one faulty 300, now I have one new 300. Eventually I may switch to 2 150 or 200 watt heaters.

One 48" flourescent tube in a strip light sitting on top of the glass. The glass top has plastic extensions with cutouts for filter and power cord access-pretty well sealed.

But that has been the set up right from the beginning, back in October, and the problem only started on the weekend.

I put the new heater in yesterday and the temperature has been stable all night. I think that was the trouble. I take another look at the one I removed for cracks.

Sorry for high jacking the thread, but near the beginning, you guys mentioned that you don't turn the heater back on until all the water's been changed already? Wouldn't that make the water temperate drop down really low, wouldn't the fish be overly stressed?

Sorry i missread your post...I thought you added another one without taking away the original... You donot need two smaller heaters in lieu of one big one...If you have adequate water flow you will be fine... SOund like the first heater was just a dud. There are a lot of places to cut corners and save money, but heaters are not one of them. Not sure what brand you had, but always stick to the best you can afford.

No, the water temperature won't drop in that amount of time, plus you're not adding cold water to the tank (hopefully). I turn the power strip off when I do water changes and my water temp rarely changes at all.
