Which secondary filtration with a canister filter? HOB or UG?

Hi all. I just bought my first tank. :dance2:

It's a used 65 gallon. I have already purchased an Eheim 2026 canister for use with this tank. The used tank came with both a Whisper 60 HOB and an UG filter with two Penguin 1140 powerheads. I would like to use one of the two used filtration setups along with the Eheim. Which one would be preferable? I have always heard of UG being oldschool yet still effective. But the HOB seems easier.

Also I wonder if the current flow with the canister and two powerheads would be too much? The tank is 24" tall is that matters for water flow.

What would you do? The tank will be freshwater community fish only and maybe or maybe not live plants. Thanks all.

All three, but make the UGF an RUGF.

Reverse UGF. basically the powerheads push water down the uplift tubes and then up through the gravel. The normal ugf flows in the opposite direction.

I would use both. I have dual 2026's in my 55 with an UGF. When I first set it up I had an EMP 400 with the UGF. I soon added a second HOB. This worked great for years and I finally upgraded to the canisters because the EMP was getting loud, old, needed new o-rings, and frankly I have always wanted a canister and could afford it. I loved it so much I bought a second. I wouldn't worry about running a RUGF. I've never had a problem running my UGF in the standard fashion.

Alright I will try them both. Seems like overkill, but what the heck right.

I like the regular UGF with powerheads..I have them on my 110 gallon and 55 gallon..I know there are a lot of people telling you the UGF is no good and stuff..But the LFS in my area, uses UGF to maintain their tanks and they have been in business for a long time..So they do know that they are doing!
