One 2028 will be enough but you might want to add a power head for circulation. I would just run a second filter for additional circulation. It'll never hurt! I have dual 2026's on a 55 gallon and dual 2028's on my other 55 gallon. I love the PRO II canister filters by Eheim. You can get their Classic line for alot cheaper but I don't mind the extra cost. They are a long term investment. Dual 2026's would be great on your tank.
Hehe I like the way you think. Now I think I'm going to go and hug my 2260. Its a tank. I've got that and a 2217 on a 120 gallon and I alternate cleanings every 3 months.
I think for the original poster that a pair of 2217 would be ideal. It might seem like its too much but there is redundancy in having two and plus they are silent and fairly cheap.

this is the way I wil probably go too. I hear all the suggestions with the HOBs and possibly RFUGF, but my whole intent for the canister is to get away from that whole scenerio. I've been using the HOB and UGF for roughly 10 year and I just want to get away from it.
HATE THEM HATE THEM HATE THEM. No problem with the actual cannister (I had a 2028) but they are HEAVY. In your case it would probably work out great though... If you have very messy fish and have to clean the trays often you are doomed. I ended up putting a piece of carpet under mine so I could atleast pull it closer to me(to remove it) from under the cabinet. It has to weigh 50 lbs full.

I ended up making something very similar to this item for my 2260 which I believe can weigh closer to 75lbs when full and its made cleaning quite easy now because I can actually move the filter http://www.accentstuff.com/pictures/Feb24_06A (13).JPG
My tank is in the basement so its easy for me to roll the thing to the furnace room, open the bottom drain valve on the filter and drain most of the water directly into the drain hole in the furnace room floor. I then open the filter, take the foam and stuff out including the large filtering noodle things and clean them in regular tap water. The bio media is in a large back which gets rinsed in a couple buckets of tank water...everything goes back and I wheel the cart back, connect and voila job done.
The nice thing about the larger filter is that you might get away with cleaning it less often...but even so, I open my 2260 every 3 months to clean it. I also have a 2217 on the same tank (is a 120 gallon) and I clean that on alternating 3 months so I never clean both at the same time....

I have used an XP3 on my 75G planted. I have since bought an Eheim 2026 pro2 (currently on sale at big als) on my 45G brackish. I would have to say the 2026 has to be atleast as good as the XP3, so it would work on your 75. But only with a very light fish load and heavy plant load, since some may think thats underfiltering it. But that leaves room for a redundant canister filter like an XP3 or a cheaper one, just incase 1 ever fails. If you can afford it, 2 2026's would be great.
Not to far off topic, I hope, but with the right hose set up, I modify my cabinets with the sliding shelf/drawer mechanisms you can find for kitchen cabinets. Then I just pull the shelf out and get complete accessability to the canister.
