Two Rena XP2's or Eheim 2026 and AQ 110?

I replace the white fiber pads once a month becuase I have sand substrate, and thankfully they pick it back up before it goes back through the impellor, making a horrific grinding noise that could keep you up... anyways, I havent replaced the main filters for a year, and they have yet to show any signs of wear.

One last question, do you think an XP3 and an XP2 would be overkill for a 65G tank?
 
Well I bought an Xp3 and an XP2 from petsmart. They even price matched big al's. Awesome deal with no shipping charges.
 
Hah - I like overkill. And with the XP3 being on $10 more than the XP2 it just made sense.

Assuming I upgrade down the road, how many gallons would an XP3 an XP2 be good for filtering with a normal bio load?
 
You can also use crib batting (as in baby crib) found at walmart for a replacement for the fine filter pad. It's 1/4" thick and comes in a rolled sheet, just cut to fit (6"X6") and you're good to go. Cheap enough you can throw it out instead of re-using.
Yes, the spong media lasts a looooooooooong time, just rinse 'em well.

I'd be comfortable using an XP3 and XP2 on a 150gal tank with a "normal" bioload. Personally I would use them on a 220, but I understock my tanks and use mucho live plants.

Don't forget, if the XP3 is too much, you can turn down the flow with the included flow adjustment nozzle. :)
 
Thanks beviking on the advice. I will check out Walmart for crib batting. COuld save some nice $$$.

The XP3's current does not seem too much as of yet, so I forwent the adjuster. But we will see once fish are added. They may hate it for all I know.
 
On my 60 g corner tank I use an xp3 a hot mag and a powerhead with canister attachment.

That is strictly for mechanical filtration so you'd have to wash it or change it much more often. I just use filter floss instead of those in my XP3 and I change it every few weeks or so when it gets brown.
