I'm interested in getting a python to assist with water changes. My question is, how do folks use it add water to an already-stocked aquarium? Anyone with municipal tapwater would have chlorine, etc. in the water. Are there some sort of tapwater filters that can be used with it? I can't see being able to use it without.

Also, my water runs through a softener. I have a separate unsoftened line in the basement that I used for my tank though (fill the buckets...carry them upstairs, etc.) Can I used softened water that has been run thru some sort of filter?

Thanks.

why not ... just add the dechlorinator as you add the water. as for 'filtering' the softened water, there's no filter that i'm aware of that will remove the salt (sodium) that the softener puts into the water in exchange for the calcium and magnesium. i used to use softened water in my tanks for years and found no negative health effects. the softener broke one day and i did water changes essentially bipassing the softener. the change in my fish was immediate. they started breeding ... something they hadn't been doing for years. that said, there are an awful lot of hobbyists that use 'softened' water without any problems.

so I can just pour the de-chlorinator into the tank and add chlorinated water with no I'll effects? I may still hold off anyway as it sounds from your experience that the fish seem to prefer hard vs. artificially softened water.

Thanks.

I just bought and used for the first time one of these python devices. I have been toting buckets for a long time. It works great. It is so much easier I really can’t imagine why I waited.

thats what i do. i take the water out and add prime then put water back in. make sure to treat all the water of the tank. if its a 50 gal tank put in dechlorinator for 50 gallons.
