How do you start yours

The method I use to start the siphon on my canster.

Connect up the cleaned filter empty of water. Blow though the outlet until air bubbles come out of the inlet, this clears the tubing of water.

Then give one quick suck on the outlet until you hear water pouring into the filter. Keeping the outlet out of the water you can watch the water level rise until the levels have equalised in the tank and pipes (any hissing noises point to a leak, listen carefully). You can then turn on the power and the filter should pump.

This method must work every time on a correctly assembled filter, if it doesn't there's a blockage or a leak. If the canister fills correctly and still doesn't work, then there's either a fault with the impeller or the canister has been incorrectly assembled.

If you don't fancy sucking then a siphon bulb will work as well.

I fill my cannister 3/4 full of water, hook it backup, then turn it on and off til it is fully free of air.

Surely that doesn't work if the pipes are empty though.

I leave my filter running to drain my pipes after the tank water level gets below the intake. If i dont, i have a flood because my lines run straight through with no quick connect, so..yes. My lines are completely empty. The method I posted only works if both the intake and outflow are below the water surface.

I disconnect my canisters, with the disconnects located at the filter, before I do the drain. Then, after cleaning, the siphon/flow naturally re-establishes.

I have a magnum 350 if that makes a difference..

That's why, they have bottom mounted motors, so filling them up first will start them.
