Hi

I am new to salt and i am converting my 30 gallon to salt. It was a fresh system and established for a year or so. Right now i have a hang in back penguin filter with bio wheel and a corner box filter . Will these 2 filter work for salt ??

i am not currently up to full salt yet and would like to keep inverts and a few fish. I have sand as substrate and rocks from beach in tank.

are the beach rocks ok ? Will this filter combo work ?

i plan on getting some live rock. any other advice or ideas ?

any help would be appreciated

I've only recently started my first saltwater tank but this is what I have learnt so far.

Filters aren't really necessary for a saltwater tank (well ones with live rock anyway). The most important things are circulation (with powerheads), plenty of live rock and for a 30g you will probably need a protein skimmer. The live rock will do all the biological filtration, particles settle out quickly in a saltwater tank so mechanical filtration isn't a big issue and the protein skimmer will remove unwanted particles from the water.

I'm not familar with the penguin filters but I have an AquaClear HOB filter on my tank and I'm going to fill it with coral rubble (take out sponge etc), the coral rubble will add to the biological filtration once it is seeded by the live rock.

More experienced people might be able to give you more advice.

by corner box filter do you mean an overflow?

.. you will need about 30 lbs of live rock and a protien skimmer.. beach rocks or any rock found out dorrs for that matte rhave to be treated.. you can bake it or boil it to kill all the pathogens.. the emporer will work but there is no need for the biowheel... and you need a powerhead like a rio 10 or a microjet 404 cycle it through with saltwater.. and your set(ish)
