can I put plants in pots to grow?

I have several nice clay pots ( small ) and I would love to have plants in them, is this possible? and if so what do I put in the pots to keep them in there? how do I fertilize these plants? I would love to have real plants in my tank, but I think my gravel is way to big. I am so new to all this that I am not sure what to do, but I figure if I have some java fern or some other easy to grow in pot plants it would look pretty cool. any help would be appreciated

Yes it is a very good way to grow plants. Especially plants like sword plants. You can sandwich potting soil between gravel at the bottom and sand at the top. Periodically just like houseplants they need to be
repotted.

Do you trim your swords roots? My swords get very large (red rubin and also an unknown type) and the roots are easily 8" long and pretty massive.

I don’t actually grow plants that way. One day I went into a fish store and the woman who ran it raised all her plants that way. She sold them all in the clay pots. So I asked her how she did this.

I just let them grow and when the old leaves get furry I lop them off, though I always leave a few for the otos. I think it makes them feel important.

if i was putting them in pots i would go with Eco-Complete or Flourite. most of the time i say sand or gravel is fine but if your only going to use a little might as well use it.

I am old school, I use laterite and gravel in tanks and in pots.
