Algae Problem

Try using a comb or tootbrush to tease it off...and lots of Amano shrimp!

I uncovered the tank today and a lot of the algae was gone. I did a big water change and added flourish, excel and nitrogen. All of the fish are fine and hopefully the rest of the algae will die off. Thanks for your help everyone.

Good to hear! Are you certain there isn't any cyanobacteria left? That stuff is resilient! If you have any traces at all I'd continue the blackout for another day or two.

Looks like all of the cyano died and turned black and I vacuumed it out. There is still some hair algae on the plants and on the glass in places I didnt reach, will that start dying off?

The Excel may or may not kill the hair algae depending on the type of hair algae. Certainly if you get your ferts in general in balance, the plants will out compete the hair algae for nutrients and it will diminish with time.

I think excel would work, it is essentially a biocide with the added benefit of adding carbon. I would definitely start using it but I don’t recommend you over dose it. I have seen it burn my java fern.

If you are going to go the flourish route don’t forget the Iron.

Nice to see things headed in the right direction.

no dosing iron while battling hair algae....

Why not?
