New tank, new filter, old media, new concerns

So I've had a 29G setup for the past year that was somewhat well maintained (nitrates were usually little hight at 35-40, all other readings were normal (ammonia/nitrites at 0, ph at 7.5 or so)) and two occupants. When it was decided that they had outgrown their current living quarters a new 55G was put into motion.

The 29G utilized a Whisper power filter with a floss cage (the kind that you're supposed to put carbon into, but I rarely did) and a sponge. I installed the 55G with an AC Powerhead that had a DIY filter floss attached for about seven hours till the dust settled, and then the new XP3 was set in motion with the sponge from the Whisper filter. After two hours, one occupant was introduced and monitored for the next two hours. Temps were steady at 82 and no abnormal behavior exhibited. 24 hours later, after the second fish has been introduced and comfortably swimming about for about ten hours, my readings are a little strange...

Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrates are all reading as 0 (or as close as the API test kit gets to 0) and I'm a little concerned.

Still with me? Good, I've got a bit more information on how the 55G is set up. The XP3 has, in order from bottom to top, 2x 20PPI, 1x Whisper sponge (from the 29G), 1x 30PPI, 2 levels of Bio Chem Stars, 1 pack of Bio-Chem Zorb, and 1 level of the Micro Fill.

The two fish (been with me for about 7 years this month) are not acting strangely beyond a slight confusion with their new quarters. Should I be worried? Was the sponge (and about ten gallons of water) from the 29G not enough to jump start the 55G?

And since this is my first post, I'll introduce myself. My name is Drew, my wife of two years is Shannon, and we couldn't live without Smooches and Mr. Mister.

:)

hey welcome you guys!
well im not to sure leme read that another time....ok so they were moved today i take it? id give it a day or two to see any spikes but also watch for them. since you moved them sooner water changes will be needed as the tank adjusts. i wouldnt be concerned yet just watch it. i woulda added more water for the old tank but 10 is fine. like i said just keep out an eye and test daily for the next week and record it if you wana to keep track.
cute names of your fish btw too!:dance2:

Well, yes and no. Mr. Mister was moved on Friday night just before midnite and Smooches about 10a on Saturday.

So, I should have waited a while more before moving the first fish? I was under the assumption (this was the first move that I didn't wait for a full fishless cycle) that using media from the old filter would do an almost insta-cycle. Perhaps I misunderstood...

I have to be honest on this one, my lovely wife is responsible. She's always had a knack with the ever appropriate pet names (we also have to cats; Whiskers and Cleopatra)

Thanks for the advice though, I'll do a water change in the morrow and monitor their condition throughout the week.

i woulda added more water for the old tank but 10 is fine.

water holds little to none bacteria so moving over old water is just puting dirty water back into the new tank.

i would keep checking the water a couple times a day and water change if you get over .25ppm ammonia nitrites or over 20ppm nitrate.

Yeah the water's not a big help but the filter media, as well as substrate, really help speed a cycle along. I'm sure your fish will be happy with their new larger home!

i never said the water would make a large difference just said what i would have done. lol but ys as they said the gravel and filter help tons.

Sorry for any confusion- I wasn't replying to anything you posted...I was responding to the original post. :)

why would it be dirty? i dont allow my water to get dirty and i figured any respectable fish keeper wouldnt either. also water of the same ph and quality as the old tank can be comforting for fish when switching. i do a 15% water change each week even though the parameters stay stable over a month.....but lets keep this to the topic now.
and clean form a biological point of view is bad.
new water has nothing in it so its a different "clean"
