Lighting for 10G?

Currently I just have your standard 10G light. Nothing special. I would like to try my first soft coral in about a month or two and wanted to get an idea of what lighting I need before hand. Since I will saving for this I don't mind getting a pricey setup since I heard more lighting is better.

Ah, and as a side note. Anyone have any recommendation on corals? I figure I might as well start researching their needs now so I can budget for them too.
 
a small Power Compact fixture would work. I have one with two 15 watt bulbs (1 actinic/ 1 daylight).

you could get one of those coralife hang on tank MH units or DIY a halide. If you would like I will get you a link to DIY it.

Is too much light ever a bad thing? I don't mind going overboard on the light. And do you have any specific product recommendations? I think I will be lazy and order them online.

So far I am not very confident in my DIY abilities. But thanks for the wonderful suggestion. Maybe one of these days I will leave a whole week off to study DIY methods and practice them.
 
I think if you are going for softies the 96W is a great light!! If you want stoney corals I would suggest the MH.
 
i agree. or even 2X55 watt PCs. softies and most lps will do great.
but for sps, MH is the way to go.
 
depends.. with an MH you can place the corals anywhere.. with PC your restricted to keeping stonies at the very top. i have to say.. the viper design runs REALLY hot

PC :runs cool and can host a majority of softies and some LPS
