Back in the days when you just bought fish and stuck em in a tank and cleaned them out when it was hard to see the fish any more, my dad had a couple of cold water tanks. Every now and then, I would find something interesting at the pet shop and take it home. One day I bought a black catfish with a silvery white underbelly that the man said was coldwater and would get on fine with the goldfish, shabunkins etc. I called him Slartibartfast and he lasted quite a while in the tank before he started getting big and a bit aggressive, when he was given a tank all to himself. He got to be about 12" plus long, I'd guess before he died. I was just wondering if anyone would know what type of fish he was, because I've never seen one since - infact I haven't seen a cw catfish for sale at all. Perhaps he wasn't meant to be cw.....

if he was black and he got that big, I would say maybe a channel cat.

Black Bullhead.

Channel cats are a steely blue colour. Could also have been a SA Redtail, but they are a more recent appearance on the LFS scene I believe and definitely not cold water.

Slartibartfast huh? Trying to remember - Hitchhiker's Guide character yes? Wasn't he the immortal who's goal in ever lasting life to insult every living being that ever existed and ever will exist?

If this is the guy, bullhead it is:

Yes he is from H2G2, but he was the man who designed Norway. Very proud of his Fjords!

Back to IDing the fish, he seemed flatter, if my memory serves me well. He was a matt black, which I suppose could have been a bluish black

It could be one of them. They get huge and are dark with a white underbelly, but certainly aren't coldwater.

You mean Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged. Good Lord, I'm such a dork.

No it's not him - the closest I've seen is that picture of the channel cat, but he definitely had a white underbelly - not pure white, like a silvery greyish white. How old are they before they mature? I was trying to remember if he always had the white belly, it's possible that he didn't (that's the problem with trying to ID a fish that's been dead and buried about 13 years!) He was probably about 4 or 5 when he died.
