Best cold water fish

FC, good info but I think it was already explained that he is going fishless as there is a little boy with high expectations and his heart set on Thursday. Of course, not everyone would agree this isn't the way to go (fishy) but it isn't unheard of and it can be worked with. Some people are just fine with it.

Rick,
you will need to get a test kit and play it by ear. You will most likely be changing the water several times a week. You don't want the water to get higher than .25 ammonia. If it gets close to that, you have to do a water change, your goal is to keep the ammonia as low as possible while allowing the beneficial bacterias to grow.

I know, but I assume he can try and explain the situation to his son. my mother used to explain that to me when I was little and I understood, but then again she did use to say I was different from most kids my age...

I meant to say not everyone would agree this "IS" the way to go...

Thanks Everyone! We really appreciate your help. The problem we face now is after running this tank for a couple of weeks I thought it would be ready to add fish. My son is patient as far as 5 and 6 year olds go but....he has now been looking forward to this to the point of waking up in the middle of the night to ask if it's Thursday yet. I convinced him to wait until Friday so that I could run into the city and pick up the appropriate water test kit. We will be very careful at monitioring the water and will also be very careful while transporting the fish in an attempt to keep the stress level as low as possible. I read that it is good to place the plastic transport bag into a paper bag and then a cooler do to our sub zero weather conditions for the transport home. We certainly want to do what is best for the fish. Please cross your fingers for us!

White clouds will be tiny when bought but will easily get to be as large if not larger than a danio and are very attarctive and active fish. Those temps are bagn on great for them as well. If you can add some live plants, they love those. 6 will be a great number. Rams horn snails will survive well as will pond snails in those temps. And ghost shrimp should do well if you want the added extra interest. I would add no other fish to the tank though.

Feed lightly during the cycle, change out a couple of gallon a day and you will be fine. Baby white clouds make very little waste. The test kits will be important for when the cycle is coming to a finish and to let you know when switching to a more moderate weekly schedual will be better.

a paper bag will be just fine for the transport home, Rick. People usually use the coolers when transporting their fish long distances, meaning trips more than an hour or so and with lots of fish in tow. The paper bag will do what's needed to keep them stress free. Don't forget to float the bag on the water for 15 minutes or so to allow the bag water to get to the same temp as the tank water. Good luck, bud, it looks like you are on a good path with what you're planning.

Once again Thanks to all! I have very much enjoyed my short time here and believe that I will become a frequent visitor. Hopefully someday I to will be able to help someone just beginning! I am already looking at 55 gallon tanks with salt water life. Uh Oh I think I am hooked! No pun intended!:)

Dont get an apple snail they are tropical. get ramshorns if any snail, they can live in cold or tropical.. red ones are very beautiful :)
many common apple snails can easily live in cooler water temps down to the mid 60s without problems. it actually makes them live longer.
